me old man has been nattering to me about freesat although he got a freeview tv
he says he wants it because of the extra movies channels,im gonna source a sky dish
for him,but what box should i be going for,bush,grundig,humax,technomate,dm500
he dont want to be spending to much

also i did see a freesat kit at me local b and q store for about £50,this included the dish, receiver,
cable and mounting brackets, are these any use or should i keep away from them

tia...

Never heard of anyone using B&Q setup but cant see them being much of a prob m8,ive fitted a few bush freesat boxes( £30 in argos)together with a sky dish with no problems, suppose it depends if you want HD or a recorder aswell...

Yes depends on the features you want.. as override says if your old man wants hd and recording.
I also have used the £30 freesat boxes from argos and they are really good if all he wants is to watch sd channels on freesat. I personally would buy a sky dish on its own with cable and equipement. Proberbly work out to around £60 with freesat box from argos but atleast your getting decent quality as i dont know what stuff there using in the b and q one but i would go for the raven dish and decent cabling.

The £30 freesat box is great for FREESAT SD ONLY with no recording facility
You might be able to pick up a second hand sky hd box online or through local paper for around £10-£20 so then you get hd channels which are free to.

All depends on your budget and what features are needed.

Ta

p.s can someone delete bottom post as it seems to have duplicated???

HD Receiver, compleate set up and installation for £90 :)
sure there would be a code for Tesco too if you was interested

what extra movie channels will he get on freesat over freeview?

Hi Mags,

There's a good chance of picking up a Sky dish ( with LNB and wall bracket ) for free at your local refuse tip.

There were a few in a skip at my local dump site last time I visited !!

cheers rodboy but our local tip closed down about two months ago :(
ive put a couple of posts with the local freecycle groups

I got my first sat dish from a bootsale for a scruffy fiver and a ex amstrad skybox for a tenner from ebay, a couple of f plugs and few meters of cable from wilkinsons came to about 20-22 quid, i fitted it myself so certainly was a cheap set up. But be aware that without a freesat card you will only receive free to air channels not freesat. You can get a freesat card for about 20 quid from sky but you only gain about 5 additional channels over free to air.

I got my dish from Amazon, think at the time it was £32 just for the Dish/LNB, but this deal seems better.

Satgear Sky/Freesat Zone 2 60cm HD Satellite Dish Kit: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

Box new:

HD box for a few quid more:

Alternatively get a second hand SD Sky box for about £20 off ebay and a white card for £10 (I posted a link in another thread)

the sat cards how long do they last or is it a yearly thing

Oops, lol.

As far as I'm aware it's indefinate unless someone else cares to add.

yes to clarify it is just one off lifetime payment for the freesat card, although you can use an ex sky subscription card but it must be the white kind though not the old blue.
