My mate has just got a iphone 3g on 4.2.1 it has a carrier lock on it (o2) i think. Whats the best way to unlock it to any network and jailbreak it. I've done some reading but i'm confused by all the different basebands etc....

as for unlocking it the best way would be to contact o2 and let them do it.
They will do it for free if its been on a contract thats now expired or £15 (taken from a pay as you go sim) if they wont do it for free.
if you dont want to pay the £15 then you can upgrade the baseband to the ipads baseband (06.15.00) and unlock with ultrasn0w
But this method involves risks...the main risk would be losing your GPS.
