I made some n00b errors in the process.. but spent sometime on YouTube, fished out the old soldering iron, and hey-presto the bad cap replaced, and PSU working.... Polarity of capacitor on PCB Cheers!

You'd be surprised how many bad caps cause PSU's to fail and devices to be faulty. I knew people who used to get large LCD TV's back in the day from tips that had died (stuck on standby etc.) In nearly all cases a few bad caps on PSU and TV's were working, cleaned up and sold on at good profit.
