Carlton Cinema to close March
Carlton has finally decided to axe its classic movies station Carlton Cinema, it has been announced today.

Cinema was the only remaining self-branded channel from Carlton, following the closure of food network Taste CFN and the short-lived Carton World and Carlton Kids channels, which were launched for the similarly short-lived ITV Digital, then known as ONdigital.

Since ITV Digital's demise, Carlton Cinema has only been available to digital cable subscribers and a handful of Telewest analogue subscribers. The channel had been in negotiations for carriage on the Sky Digital service -- which would have added millions to its potential viewing audience -- but talks between the parties recently broke down.

"We are disappointed to be closing the channel but it has to be profitable and that has not proved possible without additional carriage," explained the channel's director, George McGhee.

Carlton Cinema will go off air in March next year.
