A man has been arrested over an alleged gesture made at the FA Cup tie between Liverpool and Manchester United.

Merseyside Police said a 59-year-old from north Wales was arrested during the evening.

Earlier the force said the incident was being investigated by detectives from the specialist hate crime team, which investigates racist and other crimes.

Officers had reviewed TV footage of the match after a picture was posted on Twitter.

Saturday's game at Anfield ended with Liverpool winning 2-1.
'Genuine fans'

On Saturday night a police spokeswoman said: "The man has been taken to a police station and will be questioned by officers.

"Merseyside Police would like to thank North Wales Police and Liverpool Football Club for their assistance with this matter.

We will continue with our efforts to deal with the small number of individuals who commit offences at football matches”

Ch Supt Jon Ward

Earlier Ch Supt Jon Ward said: "We take all forms of offensive behaviour seriously, and we will always thoroughly investigate such claims.

"We cannot allow this type of behaviour to affect the enjoyment of genuine fans.

"We will continue with our efforts to deal with the small number of individuals who commit offences at football matches, in particular, with the continued use of football-banning orders."
Supporters warned

Tensions were high at the match as it was the first time the teams had met since the racist incident between Manchester United's French defender Patrice Evra and Liverpool striker Luis Suarez during their league encounter last year.

The incident lead to Uruguayan Suarez being banned for eight games by the FA, who found him guilty of making racist slurs against Evra.

Before Saturday's match, the stadium announcer warned supporters that racist and homophobic behaviour would not be tolerated.

Police said 17 people were ejected from the ground during the game, adding that two people were arrested for "low level incidents".

But the force said the majority of fans were well-behaved.

Police have urged anyone with information about the alleged incident to contact them.

All getting very silly now and just breeding more resentment among the white community

Apparently calling Mr Ferguson a black coont will not be tolerated and Mr balotelli says this needs stamping down before someone gets hurt.

deserves an example to be made of him. you cant do this to someone on the street so why shoulf you be able to do it to a footballer

what a bloody idiot ! he is a grown man ffs , some people just need to grow up.

Deserves everything thats comming his way. What an arsehole. @Emarald the only thing thats silly is the silly coont making the gesture.

Yea, he's behaving like a monkey, making a mockery quite clearly of someone (or the whole team) that can't play football, as in he's useless. Oh yeah definitive hate crime that one....NOT.

Sorry but just plain stupid if anyone thinks this is anything else other than someone taking the piss.

More likely that everyone else is mate, I'm just a realist.

Key word here "alleged"

People should remember that and not convict someone on actions alone.

Just nipping down the ASDA to buy some banana's oh wait I can't I could be arrested for potentially looking to commit a race related crime or incident.

Plain ridiculous and people are reacting in a way that is neither conducive or rational.

Exos get real mate. In the light of recent events between the teams then anyone with a modicom of sense would not make a monkey gesture as its a cert he would get weeded out and done. It is self inflicted folly on his part. Its nothing to do with buying bannanas ffs your analogy does not work. This gut made a prick of himself and should have known better. He is in a very small minority that good fans want to see the back of.

I blame it on the Boy's Brigade, sorry The Brigade of Guards, no I mean The Charge of the Life Brigade

wait no, PC 49, PC world - bear with me ....

Oh I've lost it now.

exos you seriously think that when a football fan does a monkey face and monkey actions to a black player , he is just saying he is playing bad ??
hahah get a grip . its RACISM and has NO place in english football !

I didn't read anywhere that it was stated that it was a direct attack on a player, the guy was making a monkey gesture in a crowd end of.

Again, turning it into something that it probably isn't or may not be.

I say it's others that need to get real and I'm sorry but not matter which way you cut it classing as racism and a hate crime is ****ing retarded.

Of course my analogy works, how can it be any different, both can equally be screwed to be something that someone wants it to be, and lest not forget here, the press will always create a story from it just so the gullible can read it and turn it into a cataclysmic event...oh wait...you guys already did...

At the end of the day it's my viewpoint just as you have yours doesn't mean I have to agree with it or you either, but I am a least trying to take the view that we should pretty much codemn the guy. Perhaps we should stick him in the stocks outside the ground and you can all have a turn at throwing rotten tomatoes and cabbages at him.

One shakes ones head in disbelief :(
