Do I just ftp the .ipk file to /tmp and then install it from vix menu, softcams, etc?

Yes, that is one way. I prefer to use telnet command as it gives you more deatils if there is an error.

opkg install /tmp/*.ipk (make sure only ipk you want to install are in /tmp/)
