Hi,

Not sure if I'm in the right place to do this - if not please feel free to delete.

I'm looking at getting a zgemma box to replace sky. I know very little about them apart from they connect to your existing sky dish and it's not streaming data from your broadband like an android box is, but instead uses your sky dish.

So I'm after as much information as possible to see if it'll be cheaper to bin my existing sky system and replace with one or more zgemma boxes. If anyone can answer the folowing question ot point me towards some links I'd be grateful.

I work in IT so I'm pretty tech savvy.

I currently have a main sky+ box. and 2 multiroom boxes connected to my single sky dish. This costs me the grand total of around 70 quid a month without sports or movies. I have an android box with kodi on it too.

So what will a zgemma box give me? Is the quality comparable to sky (HD?). Can I record?

Thanks

Jack.

The H2S is similar to a Sky box - dual satellite feed and with a connected external HDD can do what Sky box does, as in record one channel watch another and pause live TV

The Zgemma range can do what you want but so can many boxes. The magic happens with a process call card sharing you'll need to google this as we dont go to far into this aspect here as it would break forum rules.

Ok so after a little bit more research, you buy the box and then you need some kind of provider to provide the signal yes? What are the average costs for a decent provider compared to sky?

Where do we stand on this from a legal standpoint?

Yes a provider is needed once you have this the provider will send ecms over the net to mimic a real card.

It's illegal but end users upto now dont have much to worry about.

but you wont get hd , youll only get that with a zgemma h2h on cable

Wow - that's a little bit of a showstopper on my 55 inch TV. No HD through an existing sky dish?

So I may have to keep sky on our main TV - could I still use zgemma boxes instead of my 2 sky multiroom boxes if sky HD is used on my main one - will a single Sky dish allow this?

It is all about the amount of connections running from your LNB(dish) if you have 4 cables you can run 4 boxes (single tuner) or two dual tuners.
As stated there is no HD channels, but for what you pay per year, you sure get value.
For a beginner box, I would go for the Zgemma H2S, around £75.

If HD is a game changer, is cable (VM ) an option? If it is, then there are cable boxes in the zgemma range like the H2H, which has one cable and one satellite tuner.

I'm happy with my Zgemma H2S, I don't really mind the non HD.

I have the Sky skin and it works very well, recordings and all. I am interested in the H2H though as HD is tempting, although that would require getting another box.

But I don't regret getting the H2S, it has everything you need without the insane monthly price tag

Out of curiosity , what is it that you want to watch?

The reason I ask is you say you do not have sports and you do have Kodi. We are the same so we watch most TV (shows and movies) as and when we want to via Kodi / Exodus, the sat is just there for fillers, docus that sort of thing therefore not having HD is not an issue.

You do however get all the HD channels that you get on freesat
