This is not true for original image as mentioned by Ferret, password is left blank/empty. If it's a backup then it can be anything depending on what person that made the backup chooses, if anything.

Click to expand... oh ok, ive always just used DCC and both were always set to root and connected fine so just assumed there were the username and password

That is a DCC glitch it does not like connecting with nothing in the password box. So as Abu pointed out it will connect with anything in the password box.
