A warning to UK users

I have recently ordered a Zgemma Star H2 direct from the manufacturer and have discovered that the 13A plug and fuse are both counterfeit and very dangerous. The fuse does not contain silica and could explode if it was ever to blow. In this case however, the fuse carrier is not even connected inside the 13A plug so the fuse will never blow - even if you remove the fuse completely, the unit will still be live. In addition the earth pin (which admittedly isn't used as it is a double insulated power supply) is partially insulated. Genuine BS1363 plugs should never have a partially insulated pin, only the shorter two pins should be partially insulated. The pins are also incorrectly sized.

In the UK, socket outlets are usually on a 32A ring final circuit (ring main) and in the event of a fault within the Zgemma power supply, the 0.75mm conductors within this cable will catch fire long before the circuit disconnects at the DB (fuse board).

I would urge all zgemma owners to check, and if need be replace, the 13A plug to C7 (figure of 8) mains cable on their box for a genuine and safe replacement cable to avoid the risk of fire and/or loss of life.

I am happy to assist anyone who needs assistance in checking their cable or sourcing a suitable replacement.

I can confirm I have made the manufacturer aware (Shenzhen Air Digital Technology Co., Ltd) and am currently awaiting a further response. I will update this thread accordingly if and when I receive further communication from them.

Martin.

If it is a double insulated power supply with integrated fuse as mentioned in the original post, then as mentioned it should be perfectly safe without a fused plug. Might just be scaremongering from a rival shop/manufacturr that doesnt like these boxes getting popular....
To be on the safe side you can always source use your own UK certified figure of 8 lead and plug , they only cost a couple of quid.

Could well be scaremongering, but installer on here took a look at them and replaced them before installing in customer houses to be on safe side.
He has installed may of these stb's and likes them but didn't want to take a chance with the leads.
Is there a legit CE label on them or a china export label?

Ok just checked mine and it is as stated ....Dodgy..:( I took the fuse out and it still powered up. I have now replaced the lead . The earth pin doesn't matter as its double insulted but it should be fused .I would strongly advise all zegamma owners to check and rectify this as soon as possible by either replacing the figure 8 lead with one that works and protecting it with a 3 amp fuse or cutting the dodgy moulded plug off and replacing it with a 3 pin plug again fused at 3 amp.
I have stickied this thread.

Also just to say I bought mine from a UK source so it probably affects all boxes

If it powers up without the fuse on the plug, that just means the fuse holder and fuse are not connected/by passed.
If it's a double insulated power supply with integrated fuse as stated on the zgemma forum, does it still matter if the plugs not fused ?

Same anology as phone chargers they are not fused.

I would always have a plug fused. If you don't you have 30amp potential phone chargers will have internal fused circuits

Safer to use a certified uk figure of 8 lead then and plug. Worth cracking open the power supply to the zgemma as well though to verify it is internally fused. A post on their forum states the original leads are safe as the power supply is fused internally and double insulated.

On the back of the receiver there is a printed CE label in black. Not sure if it's legit or not, I'll test taking a picture of it when I get a chance. This needs some official confirmation from the manufacturer air digital.
I've seen a forum post elsewhere claiming the Recievers are both CE and RoHs certified, not to be believed though unless e manufacturer confirms it .

sorry lads im finding this a bit confussing for my pore little brain so is the box ok you just need a uk lead is that right pls

A properly wired and fused uk 3 pin plug on the end of the lead more precisely. So you can cut the plug off the original lead and put on a cerified uk plug with a correctly rated fuse 3amp .

manic where on the box is the label inside ? as I cant see one on the outside the plug on mine is a 3 pin

Why would you do this just buy a new cable if you are so afraid.

This sounds like scare tactics from someone it wouldn't surprise me if some people who have it out for this companies success is making this stuff up.

Yes this has been doing the rounds for months now..
I have seen it posted in a few places mainly posted by members of a well known image team forum who like Greek gods.

Thanks for the info, just bought a zgemma box, hopefully now i won't come home one day to find the house burnt down!

Lol, that particular team have taken a strange dislike to zgemma recievers for some reason, they refuse to acknowledge that boxes are not clones.

Probably because it threatens sales of the manufactures they write images for. They can't compete against zgemma on value for money or price.
