A mates' lad been given a V1.0 xbox and been asked to mod it to play backups. Thought it would be easy, lol.
I registered at a certain forum and paid a small VIP donation to access downloads. Read some tutorials and decided to go for SID5 pimped cd edition as I don't have the required exploit games, any old xbox games for that matter.

Burnt the disc, but everytime as soon as I do the hotswap, the disc stops spinning and the cd drive is no longer recognised as being installed.
Have tried this on my spare pc as well but get the same result. I have made sure I am using the primary ide and am using the error 12 to unlock the xbox hard drive.

Tried googling this problem but can't seem to get a possible solution to this problem. Thinking of going the tsop way now which will obviously mean I will have to accquire an exploitable game and a couple of other bits and bobs.

Suggestions for my hotswap problem would be great or info as to the minimum that I would need to get this box playing backups. The lad is only 8 so doesn't need it to be all singing and dancing.

i have the game m8 could send it your way as long as you send back.

Thanks for the offer nistleboy, much appreciated.
It seems I need a special usb lead and a memory card also, so will read a little more and get them ordered.

I will be in touch as soon as I know exactly what I'm doing mate, thanks again.

Just a recap on the problem I had trying to hotswap. Nistleboy kindly lent me a splinter cell game which will be winging its' way back to him today.
Thanks David, very much appreciated as you know.
Never actually got round to using it though unfortunately. The hotswap wasn't working for me as the cd drive stopped responding in my pc as soon as I did the swap. So my plan was to use a usb lead and Davids' disc, the usb lead I ordered arrived and was for the 360 so not compatible. I then decided to hardwire a usb socket into the xbox and after doing so could not get it to fully recognise any of my sticks, apparently only certain sticks are compatible.

I decided to look further into my hotswap problem and changed the xbox hard drive setting from cable select to master. This cured the cd problem but I still couldn't get the xbox drive unlocked. After a lot of failures it finally dawned on me, so obvious now that it makes me cringe.
On the pc I was using I had to press F1 to continue to boot from disc as there was no hard drive connected. After going into the bios and disabling the hard drive completely in boot options the xbox was recognised first time.

A special thanks to fitzbhoy as well who offered to loan me everything needed to perform the usb hack. Unbeknown to him I had just cracked it. Much appreciated though mate.
