Modded Xbox Stuck on Xbox Live update screen

Hi,
I have a softmodded Xbox (which was my nieces) and it just started prompting "xbox live is unavailable" and keeps trying to connect. I can't get past the screen and can't seem to ftp to it either.
I tried using an xbox live enabled game and this didnt work either?
Anyone got any ideas?

Did u take a copy of the eeprom and hd key when you softmodded it?

Have you tried switching the box on using the eject button?ie tray open option
