yeah complete n00b here like, got an external 1TB usb drive that i just plugged into the 360 and it says "no devices found" tried formatting it on a comp but only get NTFS options and not fat32.

How the hell do you get to the XeX menu as well? after a profile has been created? but need a storage device 1st if that's the case? or am i barking up the wrong tree

guess i need a hard drive attached to it 1st to get the XeX menu working....day'um haven't got one as well...lol sold about a million in the past as well!

ok think i'm just trying to jump in at the deep end....i have seen the following so assume that i will have to do it to get the menu up after installed a hard drive,....missing out stage 3 for now as 1st time install?

1) Extract XeXMenu_v1.0-LIVE.rar to "XeXMenu_v1.0-LIVE" folder on a usb stick
2) Extract XeXMenu_v1.0-XEX.rar to "XeXMenu_v1.0-XEX" folder on your usb stick
3) run the old XeXloader from your hard drive
4) navigate to the "XeXMenu_v1.0-XEX" folder on your usb stick and run the default.xex
5) using this program, navigate to /Hdd1/Content/0000000000000000/C0DE9999/00080000/ and delete the file
6) navigate to the "XeXMenu_v1.0-LIVE" folder on a usb stick, click copy the file
7) go back to the folder /Hdd1/Content/0000000000000000/C0DE9999/00080000/ and paste
8) quit back to dash and it will all be done for you

Are you using the 1tb drive as a usb drive? usb drives can't be formatted (as far as I know anyway) on the 360.

Use a disk manager (I used EASEUS Partition Master), which allows you to format the drive to FAT32 (takes moments too unlike windows format which can take hours)

Do you have a regular 2.5" 360 hdd for the xbox? As in to go in the side port?

You can run xexmenu by either copying the relevant files to that HDD, or Memory Unit, or alternatively burn the Xexmenu to cd and launch from CD. I personally launched from CD to begin with to test, and then used xexmenu from the cd to allow me to copy the files to the main 360 hdd

and don't forget to use XEXMenu 1.1...a lot better than the 1.0 and doesn't cook the 360 with cpu usage

So just to summarise......if memory serves me right

1. Format USB HDD in PC to FAT32.
2. Copy any files you may need to transfer to that disc too to save time later. (Including an extracted Xexmenu 1.1 Live)
3. Burn Xexmenu CD.
4. Boot off CD in 360
5. In Xexmenu navigate to navigate to /Hdd1/Content/0000000000000000/
6. Copy the contents of the XEXMenu Live rar to that folder.....so in effect you'll have a file called C0DE99990F586558 in /Hdd1/Content/0000000000000000/C0DE9999/00080000/
7. Reboot 360 and you should now see the XexMenu in your game demos section.

Hope I haven't missed anything out

nope all out of hard drives for the 360 i'm afraid....So if the external is formatted to fat32 and i copy over the files xexmenu to a USB pen drive or burn i'll be able to run it and install it? (of course once i get a xbox 360 hard drive? if i'm following correctly ?)

Edit : i so i can install it to the USB 1TB - but would it be better to get a 360 hard drive?

i'm glad the title of this forum is n00bs, count me in on this one...

Thanks ok formatted the USB drive as FAT32 thanks for the programs very useful, and have downloaded XeXMenu_v1.1-ISO and i'm burning it to cd now.....

Do i need XeXLoader 0.26 - LIVE.rar as well....or just go ahead and burn the XeXmenu and follow your instructions....

Sorry been at this like all night and jumped straight in like..

you can only get the xexmenu working on a memory stick ie an xbox one or the hard drive i believe

so i need a hard drive for the 360 then?

but i've seen vids with no hard drive installed is that after the intial set up when it can be removed?

hmm no sure tbh i read a few forums that says it must be either like a 256mem

maybe they ones have the internal memory ie the newer ones

well burnt to dvd and went to play game and it's asking me to create a gamer profile and of course to create one you need to be signed in thus telling me that i need to start off with a hard drive attached to the 360 - dam digity! haven't got one spare as well, got one all packed up and ready for shipping - shame i can't temporary use that one....

you'll definately need some sort of memory either by way of a memory card/unit, or a hdd. I'm sure I read/saw somewhere that you can get or make some sort of adapter that would allow you to connect your 3.5" drive that you currently have to the side port on the 360 so it works as if it was a regular. Might be worth looking into that if you don't want to get a seperate one.

Is it a Xenon xbox? If a newer console it may have a larger nand size - not sure if it is allowable to write data to the free area on that? Just like how the newer legit consoles do for storing the profile?

ah ok thanks, will have a look around for a hard drive, can't believe the amount that has passed through my hands and i've sold for pennies compared to fleabay and that, i even gave me mate a 60 gig one for free the other month, they say what comes around goes around! but wish i'd kept it now, and have just packed up a 20 gig one with an xbox that i've sold...dang,diggerty!

Time for me to look for one then and then i'll report back...lol

thanks again (might look into that 3.5 hack the morra)

p.s not sure of the board

could refund the ebay seller and apologise profusively (sp?) that you just dropped it while packing etc etc? :)

Remember though you don't have to use a 360 hdd.

You can just use the hdd case, and put any size 2.5" drive in there.

I've put a 320gb drive that I had into the 360 shell, and using that purely for storing arcade titles, dlc, and save games. Rest of the stuff I have running from the USB external....which is a 3.5/2.5" quickdeck docking station, that runs through a USB switcher (a bit like them old scart ones where press the button 1-4) that way I use the docking station to provide "stuff" to the popcorn player, wii, and 360 without having umpteen portable hdds and just swap the hdds about :) old VHS cases make great holders for hdds :)

aye i plan to do the same as above as a 320gb drive is £40 off amazon and a case is about £11 off ebay no one will know if they look :)

I've just been given a laptop 40 gig hard drive, do you think i could get that working, not really bothered about how it looks as long as i can get it working, skint at the moment and won't be able to afford a drive for it as think I've been a little over zealous with splashing the cash this month.....

It's a 40 gig laptop hard drive that "meanie" gave me for me pals laptop....?

it would work yes - but do you have a 360 hdd case you can plug it into? If not then have to either get the empty case shell, or pretty sure if look about there is a guide on how to modify the end manually to be a regular sata connector instead of that big chunky port thing that plugs in

ah don't think it's a sata it's an old IDE ....DOH

Ok just rang the local computer store and can get a 250 gig western digital SATA Bevs HD.

But just wondering these have a power connector and a SATA interface i'm going to have problems as haven't got the hard drive case for it and i can imagine that the power and that sata is included inside it (the 360 hard drive case)or does it just run off the sata?

don't forget you can use any sata 2.5" drive now - it doesnt have to be a WD Bevs drive any more as a jtagged machine doesnt care and will format to the maximum the drive has.

But about the connection.

If you look here AnandTech: Inside Microsoft's Xbox 360

you can see when the hdd case is opened....the hdd plugs into a small black plastic port (4th pic). That fits into both the power/sata connectors on the hdd and the other end is what plugs into the side port on the 360.

So yes you would need at least an empty shell or alternatively should be possible to make up an adapter to convert it, but would still need to get parts

unfortunately looks like a shell alone would cost about 14quid.

You sure its not worth going down the cancelling the ebay item you sold saying it got dropped or something......unless got a good price for it of course.

As if a shell costs about 10-14...or even to make a cable manually you're prob looking at a few quid in parts, then the hassle of resoldering wires, and then trying to find some housing to put it in to keep it tidy.

I've searched for seeing if can find an adapter to buy seperately but can't see anything yet
