Hi all

My mates 360 has developed the 3 red lights fault and he has had it over a year so is out of warranty.
Is it possible to fix this or can i swap cases with mine(still under warranty) and send back ?

How thorough are MS, what checks do they do ?

Thanks.

have you registered the warranty.

there is a security seal whn you remove the front, amke sure that doesn't break.

Not registered, not sure about seal, but i have seen stickers on ebay for £5 or remove one off mine with hairdryer.
One of my other mates sent his back flashed, with warranty sticker obviousley removed, and they ent him a new one. It was in warranty though.

They will charge you £80 to send back an out of warranty box.

I sent mine back flashed and warranty sticker damaged and they just sent me a new one, but my box was out of warranty

Hmmmm MS have made me blow my stack on this issue...

My box had the GRAW2 freezing issue but no other problems. I have been in touch with both the devoper & MS and they know it to be an issue.

After to speaking with someone at MS Support the saked me to try running teh game without my harddrive attahed. Which I tried and got the 3 lights of doom. Now it is dead.

So I filled in an email request from. Nothing for days.

I called the MS Support (Read: "Chocolate Fire Guards") and they wanted to charge me £80 for correcting smething they have caused.

This is what the tech told me... Apparently there is an issue with earlier boxes and the heatsink compound around the ATI Graphics adpater inside.

He also told me that this had happened because this particular game is HD and this overworks the chipset. (Laugh...Laugh).

So I am now in converstaion with them regarding the issue as I am not prepared to pay for it. They are currently refusing to.

So what I have done is go and buy a new Premium System with an accidental warranty policy on!!! So I have a new console, one to play with and repair if MS don't and also an insurance policy that cost me 35 for 3 years warranty.

I will be calling them again today and apparently a manager will be calling me back.

If you are suffering this issue it might be an idea to check the powersupply lights. If they are green when you try to switch on the console then the PSU is good but if it is orange then something else is wrong.

A point of note - MS do give you another 12 month warranty when you pay for it to be repaired. They also told me that if I attempt the repair myself or even open the casing they will not touch it.

I'm a fool when it comes to principles but I love a good support line scrap.

I will play with my console & let you know what I find.

In continuing my discussions with the No_Help_Line they informed of two things today...

1. If I attempt the repair myself or even open the console then they will not repair it ever again. So basically they are saying - damage seal stickers - you're on your own.

2. No one other than Mircosoft are allowed to service the units. The new shop warranty if it is repaired by someone else Microsoft will ban it from online use, even if it is the shop.

3. With every console ever shipped MS included an extra warranty slip for £29.99. Not sure if this si actually the case but apparently they do.

Quite how they know it has been serviced as opposed to modded I don't know so I pay little attention to number 2, because for them to ban the unit after it has been repaired by a warranty from someone like GAME, I think would be enetering into a very grey area law wise.

yippee mine now fixed for this issue. I will still argue with Microsoft though!!!

Towel trick worked for me. It might not for you but it did for me.

1. Basically wrap your 360 in a towel so that it stops the air flow through the unit.

2. Then switch it on and wait for 20 minutes and look at teh display - if it has changed to a different error. Mine went to 4 flashing lights showing no AV cable connected. It might just go to two lights saying overheated. Mine took about an hour and was red hot.

3. Switch off the 360 and leave to stand until cool to touch again. About 30 minutes I left mine for.

4. Switch your unit back on again. If it has worked it will go green again.

IMPORTANT : NEVER LEAVE THE CONOSLE UNATTENDED IF YOU ATTEMPT THIS - THERE IS A FIRE RISK.

I wil take this up with MS tomorrow but it looks like I can return my new one at the weekend!!

quick update on my console. Still working but have the GRAW 2 Freeze issue and also on Spiderman last night one lock up.

I called MS to talk to them about the Design Issues they have. I spoke to a really pleasant guy who is going to come back to me tomorrow regarding my unit and my findings. He was certainly aware of Graw2 issues and the Towel Method!

I will keep you posted

It depends m8 if the three red lights are a bad flash there is a possibility of it being recoverable depending on various factors here is a link to some of the error code meanings h**p://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=484726 . The red lights flash in an order to give a code that can point you in the direction of what may be wrong with it.
