Hi,

I have a router setup and i can share folders using the pc, meaning that i can drop folders on to the lap top, when i come to do it the other way round i get the following errors.

Thanks

You probably have a firewall enabled somewhere! Or even two enabled on the one machine which is stopping the connection. Load up the firewall settings on your PC and add the ip address of the laptop to the exceptions page!

i thought i would say something here, if your main pc is xp pro and the laptop is home you probally wont be able to connect ever, I am in the same situation, there are some protocals left out in the home edition. Ive spent a year reconfiguring the network and have never achieved home to pro connection, it a ok the other way around.
sorry to be the bearer of bad news, bloody m$ have a lot to answer to.

if you have norton or macaffee firewall disable it for 5 mins and try connecting...if no luck click on start...run..inside that box type cmd....you should see a black dos prompt screen...type IPCONFIG/ALL and you should have your i.p. and all other important things like dns server settings ect.... check to see if dns server settings are same as the one configured on your router.. to do this depending on which router you have open up Internet Explorer and type in the URL the ip of your router... example .... 123.12.123.1 and press return...it should bring up a router config page, this is your router firmware and you can edit it from here or do it manually from the internet connections tab in control panel...if all still fails try opening up local area connections and click enable connection and file and printer sharing properties..... if norton and macaffeeis disabled i would try windown fireall as it has a habit of blocking ports ect...just disable windows firewall and make norton/macaffee your default settings...sorry if all over the place i'm drunk lol:Cheers:

Oh well thanks to all that helped. ! much appreciated !

Shit i wish i had installed xp pro on the lap top b 4 i got all the router and that set up.

Why dont you set up a FTP server on your machines.
Its a lot faster than MS file share as well.

There is lots of free ones about, have a google

uhmm right click the folder you want to share and choose properties then the sharing tab
on there you can set network access to that folder from other computers
the way it is atm you just dont have permisssion to access that share ;)

Why not use the hidden shares that are enabled by default within Micro$oft Windows Networking?

Listen very carefully, I shall say this only once.

On machine B go Start | Run | cmd press ENTER

In command prompt type: ipconfig
this will display the IP address of that machine, note it down (e.g 192.168.0.1)

On machine A type the following in a windows explorer (or IE) address bar:

\\<ip address of Machine B>\c$ e.g \\192.168.0.1\c$

it'll ask you for a username / password if you use different usernames / passwords on each machine. Enter the administrator username and password for machine B. Bingo, it'll open up the root of the C Drive on Machine B.

You can change c$ to d$ etc for each drive on the machine you are trying to access.

You can do the same on the other machine to access that machines files.

By using the IP address and c$ as the share you eliminate the need to use netbios / dns naming on the network which can cause a problem should on device be incorrectly configured.

Please ensure that you don't have any 3rd party firewall software running.. like McAfee or Symantec/Norton as I have seen that block network traffic.

Hope that makes sense and works...

I have a desktop running XP Home Edition and a laptop running XP Pro and I can view shared folder on each machines. Both machines on the same workgroup, i.e. MSHOME. Just share the folder on either machine and it shows up in My Network Places.

bullet proof sever is a good programme if u want to set the laptop as a sever so u can view the files with your desktop with a tfp prog .could also try remapping the drives

OKOKOK STOP!

Whoever said you cant network xp pro and home together need to read this. Plus the original poster!

I had this same problem, and after many people telling me they didnt know, I worked it out for myself. Now follow these instructions on both computers.

goto:
-->start
-->control panel (i have mine in classic mode, if you do not locate the network connections)
-->network connections
*right click on your lan card*
-->properties
*click on 'install...'*
*select protocol and click ok*
*select 'network monitor driver' and click ok*

*now back in the main window along the network tasks menu on the left hand side select 'set up a home or office network'*
*click next until the bullets page*
*find your type of connection. It is likely the one that says you connect to the internet through a residential gateway*
-->next
*type in the description and name and press next*
*chose a workgroup name (eg HOME or MSHOME) and press next*
*turn on file and printer sharing*
*now keep pressing next until the last screen, at which point you want to finish, or you can take it to another computer, but there is no need*

Now you gotta do this on both computers. Then goto My Networks and view all computers in my network and the other computer should come up if it worked. Make sure you put both computers on the same workgroup name.

If this doesnt work you could try taking the install of one of the computers to the other one.

If you setup is anything different to this you may not be on service pack 2, that is fine, it may just have things layed out differently or have stuff in a different order.

cheers guys for all your help.

Works a treat !

thank you, thank you
