Hi

Cant receive wiifii on my laptop upstairs. Think my WiFi isn't powerful enough. The router is in a boxed room downstairs.

Best is to get an Apple Airport Extreme and then get and airport express. Quick fast setup and great coverage.

You can also use an old router and homeplugs as a wifi extender ;)

Look in classified section on DW there is some for sale

You have a few options depending on how deep your pocket is.

1.Get one of these Ubiquiti :: UniFi, WiFi System with Software Controller
You will have to program it so it depends on your skill. Also it is recommended to install it in the ceiling as it's directional.

2.Much cheaper than the above easy to install.
TP-Link TL-WA850RE

3.Homeplugs I don't recommend home plugs for many reason's one being bandwidth loss as it passes through the electric wires and sometimes the electric wires can't carry the full capacity. You may also get latency.

If you want the best option go for the Unifi you can't go wrong with them.'

Get yourself ubiquity unfi access point ,you won't regret it. I bought mine for £65 for my loft room. Excellent piece of kit.
I can pick up wifi all over my house without any lag.

Guy in the link says he used a headless linux setup, could a raspberry pi be used instead?

All you need to do is connect the UNIFI to a switch not directly to your computer then use the instructions to program it, one important thing you will need to power this from the POE of the power supply that comes with it so a LAN cabled is required to reach wherever you plan to put the AP.I have one installed in my house with no server/or any other device these will also run in the Cloud.

I cannot vouch for the Rasberry pi as I have no experience with them.

One more question. Is this just for 2.4ghz or can it be both at the same time?

All the above suggestions are awesome. Though you could try downloading a free app on your phone to see what the wireless traffic is like in your home. Sometimes there could be a lot of interference if the channels are too close to each other. 2.4gHz is getting pretty crowded. Another free solution to try before making a purchase would be to move the current router into a more open and central location and see how it does.
