Hi guys,

I'm wondering if there is a way that I can set up my own private cloud type network for music.

Literally from my laptop to my phone but streaming instead of having all the music saved on my galaxy s5.

This is a pipe dream would make my life so much better. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance.

Hi Joe,

Streaming is quite a complex topic. in theory it should be as simple as buying some storage and then pointing your device to it!

However this is never the case, streaming over IP would need your device to be able to talk with the server, and pull them item (MP3) from the cloud, I am an apple user and they would never allow this lol. take money away from apple lol heavens forbid!

With google driven devices I would assume (note the assume part) that they would allow you to link your music with a folder or some kind of network storage, however would they allow you to have a network drive that is not physically connected to your home network??? proxy etc... I do not know.

But it would be simple however to buy some cloud storage that had a windows operating system then create a VPN link between your home network and the cloud based storage. then it would be as simple as putting the IP address of the server into your device as it would be classed as on your local network.

Again I am not familiar anymore with android - it might be even simpler by just putting in the ip address in your software...

I think plex is a paid subscription if you want to play to a portable device

Get yourself a 'Western Digital MyCloud' (I picked up a 4TB one a few weeks ago), store all your music, movies or photos on there and stream to your phone/tab using the 'WD My Cloud' app. Doing this right now (using my Note 4) and makes life much easier....good thing is, you wont have to leave your laptop or PC on either.

Not trying to pour cold water on this- it was my first thought when I saw the thread- but doesn't WD charge a fee for this service once the first year is up? It may not be much- I don't know, but I did notice that I cannot access mine from anywhere outside of my home network. I never did activate the WD cloud, thought I could just do it manually using DYN and port forwarding.

No the cloud service is free of charge. You just need to turn the service on on your device and open a couple of ports on your home network. Then you need to create an account on the WD My Cloud service and link your device.

No need of DYN DNS service. You are not connected on your device directly.
Actually your device is connected on the My Cloud Servers, and you, using your phone you connect on the My Cloud servers. You sign in, and automatically you gonna get connected to your device.
P.S Sounds complicated but its not even close to complicated.

As suggested it sounds good in theory but can be quite complicated..
If your not so savvy stick to plex or something like that that is fairly simple to set up and share with your devices with your friends should you wish as plex is well supported.

Put in mind though, that Plex is a software suggestion, that will need your pc to be on. And WD MyCloud a hardware suggestion which is a stand-alone device/Hard Drive. Both can do what you need. Its your decision to choose what is best for your.

Yes you could use any type of nas server but it's the cost...
Mind you for around £100 you can get a 2TB wdmc..so not too bad.

If you already have MP3's on your pc you can use PS3mediaserver (free software) to stream the music files to any DNLA player, there are a few for android.

PS3mediaserver will also stream any shoutcast stream (there are over 50,000 radio streams and over 800,000 personal streams at any one time).

Also PS3mediaserver will stream video and picture (as slideshow etc.).

PS3mediaserver will stream files on any drive internal or external or on network connected drives or PC's.

You can also use it to stream over the internet from your PC as long as you have a DDNS setup to your home.

It can stream different content to several different devices at once too.

The mother-in-law uses this method to watch films in her house in Stockport from my house 35 miles away. :)

Not sure if this will help.
