WHITE DG834GT ONLY!

Picked up a white netgear router from sky (one of me mates) and just plopped some custom firmware on it, opens the router right up, VPN's and loads and loads of extras, firewalls etc loads to mention, just have a look down the left hand side of the router config page in the pics and as you can see there's many an option to keep one occupied...lol, i'm cable of course and you might think well what's the point, if your after a bridge for your existing ADSL/Cable then a couple of these would do you, just diable DHCP and then configure the bridges etc, jobs a good en! (i will get round to posting a small PDF when i can on how to create a bridge...!)

I've always bought the netgear cable routers but looks like if you want to create any wirless bridges etc then not only do you have the netgear v9, and a whole lot more but for the price you can grab a few of these! SlY DG834GT routers, then plop the CFW on them.

i gave my network card on XP a static IP address, just to make things easier as have laods of connections - 192.168.0.15 -

Was dead easy, but one thing to point out is >>> when you download the fimrware make sure that you only leave the english firmware in there are it'll do what i done and flashed the german version or some thing to it. so once you downlaod the fimrware pack delete all the ones that don't end in eng. (of course if you can speak other lingo then go for it!...lol)

Once i was up and running i just disabled DHCP and then gave it an ip address with-in my network. 192.168.1.15 (other routers have 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.5) so you could set it to some thing other than what i have of course.

(not my work - but thought i'd share the findings)
  1. First of all, you have to download the Recovery Utility and save it for eventually further usages (you easily won't be able to connect the router if you absolutely need to use it).
  2. Power down the router and wait about 20 sec to let internal capacitors discharge properly.
  3. Unpack in a folder the Recovery Utility archive you downloaded before.
  4. Put the firmware you want to upload in the recovery utility folder (PLEASE CHECK IF MODEL IS CORRECT BEFORE UPGRADING).
  5. Connect your PC to the router with the LAN cable (RJ-45) and please disconnect all the other devices connected to the router (pc, print servers, etc.).
  6. Push and keep hold the little reset button on router's rear without releasing it, then power up the router: now power and tick leds should alternatively blink (NOTE: some router models may have different idle procedures: please read the related documentation).
  7. Release the reset button: router is now in IDLE mode, ready to be updated.
  8. Execute RmDrv.exe from the recovery utility folder: this file initializes ethernet device to physically comunicate with router LAN switch.
  9. Execute UpgradeWizard.exe from the recovery utility folder.
  10. Clicking next, in the first screen you will find a list containing all pc's network devices: select the one connected to the router and click next.
  11. Now you will see a screen containing router's MAC address only: select it and click next.
  12. Then you will see a screen containing some router informations: check if they are correct and click next.
  13. Click Upgrade.
  14. Now recovery procedure will start; it is divided into 3 steps: Erasing EEPROM, Upgrade and Verification; wait until termination without disconnecting or powering down the router in ANY CASE.
  15. When the upgrade is finished click Close to exit the program, execute RmDrv.exe again from the recovery utility folder and refresh/restart your network device to reactivate it: now router should be ready to work.
Jobs a good en, have fun!

Once it had updated the firmware i simply restarted and the default log in is admin and the password Sky...

REMEMBER: THIS FIRMWARE IS UNOFFICIAL AND ABSOLUTELY UNSUPPORTED BY NETGEAR/SLY

USE it AT YOUR OWN RISK !!

Thanks for the post Dibbers m8. Got a few of those around so will have to have a play, after they have been dusted off of course

no worries i like a good exploit now and then! if your on ADSL it'll probs come in handy for the ADSL side of things, but for cable, bridges etc then it's fine! enjoi!
