hi there, just in need of a little help

just to let you folks know, so far ive got the camera system up and running and set up via ethernet to the adsl modem router.....i can access the cameras no problem on the network on my pc.........

ive now got to set the ports on the router for remote access on the internet for viewing from another computer at home.....

so far not a problem......

the problem i can see happening is when the isp change the public ip addy.... i will not be able to access the cameras remotely......and will have to go to the router or find out what the new isp public ip is........

is there anyway around this?

anyone?

cheers chris

think you would require some sort of Domain name so from WAN you can type in summit like [email protected] or what ever and let DNS do the work, so if your pupblic IP changes the DNS will be updated and you type in the same.

so you dnt need to type 82.167.34.127 etc all the time.

not sure how to do with your cames but i would imagine they would come with instructions to do this if they IP cams.

ip cameras (in my experience) do have dyndns options on the,, but also your router should do also.

my recomendation would be to opne a free aacount up at dyndns.org (any router that supports dyndns will have an option for this domain server)

then either set you camera to a domain you have made up, or if your camera doesnt have the option, set it up on your router , and then use port forwarding.

so you coule use terminator2k2.dyndns.org:666 the port 666 is just the port you have forwarded to your ip camera.

simplest setup is.

join dyndns

greate a host whatever you want example mycctv.dyndns.org

now on your router or ip camera in the ddns (maybe named DDNS DYNDNS DNS) enter your username and password to login into your dyndns account, and in the host portion , enter mycctv.dyndns.org.

what happens then is that either thr router or ip camera , when it detects and IP cahnge will update your dyndns hosts ip information.

thats how i have mine setup.....

Also, one thing to bear in mind its a free service and it needs to be used at least once in 30 days or else the account will be deleted due to inactivity!

no ip is also a popular one, just google for more...

No-IP™ Free - Free Dynamic DNS - DDNS

Thanks

yep thats true, however 1 thing to remember, nearly every (i think all actually) router or device that supports dynamic dns will support dyndns.org however not all will support no-ip. this is especially good advice, if like me you take a paid account for customers etc etc , you can basically get a dyndns paid account safe in the knowledge that your devices will 99.9999% support it off the batt.

dyndns paid gives you 30 domains for $15 dollars a year i think, with no expiry, which for me is well worth it.

I think I remember reading in the past that routers update dyndns everytime your IP renews (which should 50% of your lease time). Seeing as most ISP give you a 24 hour lease the updates should be going in every 12 hours so little chance of the account expiring.
