Hi

Somehow my mothers wireless buffalo airstation router is asking for a password and she has forgotten it, the user is ROOT, any ideas on how i can solve this looked on their site but could not find anything and tried the little reset button but still asks for password ??

Cheers

usually if you hold the reset button in for around 30 seconds it'll factory reset it.

Worked on a couple of different routers i've worked on, including my belkin :)

default for baffalo routers is user:root pass:leave blank

I had similar on a Linksys a little while ago. Despite pressing the reset it wasn't clearing. I had to do it like this...

Press reset for 30 seconds.

Pull power cord for 2 minutes.

Press reset for 30 seconds again.

Power up again, and press reset (30s) again.

i have two "default" options for the Buffalo units:
1, user:admin, Pass:admin (Terastation)
2, user:root, Pass:admin (Base Station-g)

WHR-HP-G54 running Tomato V1.21

Buffalo Technology
Product: AirStation WHR-HP-G54 High-Power Wireless Cable/DSL Smart Router
Method: HTTP
Username:
rootPassword: (blank)Level:
Notes: Default ip is 192.168.11.1

variation in default login details maybe due to the the running tomato?

Don't know but the manual also states Root Admin. I can scan it if you care that much :)

I think what v14 is saying, is that Tomato is a free, open-source, Linux-based firmware for some wireless routers, so it's possible the default logins are not what you might expect, or what it says in the manual.

You might have to see what the default login is when running Tomato, as it's possible the developer's of Tomato have used a different default login to what the router got shipped with...

Did you try what I suggested previously?

Why doesn't my password work?

Make sure you're entering the username "admin" or "root". Unlike the Linksys firmware, they are required in Tomato.

If you're upgrading from the DD-WRT firmware, telnet into the router *before* upgrading and type "nvram get http_passwd". The result will be your password in Tomato. This is necessary because of a change in DD-WRT's way of using the standard http_passwd variable.

If you have a Buffalo router or a Linksys with a pushable Cisco logo, push the AOSS/Cisco button for at least 20 seconds, then telnet into the router on port 233. Type "nvram get http_passwd" to retrieve the password or "nvram set http_passwd='your_new_password'" followed by "nvram commit" to set it manually. Reboot the router using the command "reboot" after using this method.

If nothing else works, push the reset button for a few seconds to reset all of the settings. The default password after resetting is "admin".

Think you are confusing me with someone else :)

I've been having the same troubles as the Original Poster. I've reset it to factory, but User:root pass:<nothing>, user:root pass:admin aren't working. It says that root is the default, as well.
