I have 2 laptops one with a USB wireless adapter and one with a netgear PMCIA card. I have a cable connection and a netgear Router. The problem is that if I leave the security off of the network both laptops connect fine, as soon as i enable the security ( in this case i'm using 128 wep ) neither connect they both have a IP but not the correct one for the router. Even tried formatting the one Lappy but still nothing. I have tried connecting through the windows wireless network thingy and the netgear software and its fine until I enable the WEP key. Slowly sending me more crazy than usual LOL Please any ideas anyone??? Thanks. :)

you should try connecting one cpu through the others connection and only encrypt the host

I have Just created a WEP key on the Router then entered this WEP key into the wireless settings on the Lappys, its says its connected but with limited or no connectivity and then gives "Unable to obtain IP address", as soon as I disable the WEP both lappys go on straight away.

try unplug both modem and router then power both on , u should have the 2 screens in ya task bar right click on them and veiw wireless networks , does it then find urs as both dongle and card should support wep , let me know how u get on ,

Ok i have had this problem before and the resolution was changing the type of encryption and authentication method of the wireless connection. Also sometimes using the very long alpha numeric key works better, just copy and paste this.

Hope this was of help.

make sure that the access points and clients use the same type of WEP encryption also i'd opt for WPA since its more secure if your clients support it that is.

access control you need to enter both macs from the lappys onto the router under wireless access control, and on the lappys you need to go to the internet settings and enter the wep (or whatever encryption) password, otherwise you will not be able to connect to the router or net.

Finaly got round to sorting the problem after ignoring it for a few weeks lol Changing the kind of encryption from WEP to WPA seemed to solve the problem, weird though always used WEP and never had a issue. Thanks Chaps :)

WPA's way better anyway.

Windozzzzzzz is crap at telling you whats ACTUALLY happening when setting up wifi.
If the encryption's wrong, it still connects WIRELESSLY it just cant get an IP address (but still says that it's connected)
