Hello everybody,
could somebody please tell me the correct procedure for setting up port forwarding

I have single laptop at home Using netgear router wgr614 V6, motorola sb5100 modem, and 10meg conn on Virgin Media/telewest.

I use Utorrent for downloading, and have selected a single port on utorrent (setup to use same port everytime, , and forwarded this to the router (or so in think)

My netgear routers login 192.168.1.1, takes me into the settings
on port forwarding, i have set server ip address as 192.168.1.3
entered the specific port, and saved settings.

But my download speed seems still to be crap, around 50kb, and i get the little red icon on utorrent telling me that my router/firewall is inhibiting my d/l speed.

Am i doing this correct?

About a week ago, i set this up and it seemed to be working fine, d/l about 400kb rate, and when checking the port using portford.com, it said the port was open.
The only thing i have done since then was to turn off router/and then back on.
But i can still see the setting in there, for the ones i had set up!!

cheers

tom

Or more precisely, this page

Follow that to the letter and that's how to setup forwarding :)

Hi there,
this is the page that i had followed (see original post), but still seem to be having a problem.

Do you always need a static IP address to set up port forwarding?

and if so

Is there any pro's or cons, in having a static Ip address

cheers

Hi guys,
These are the pages i have been following to an absolute "T".
but i am still getting the port firewalled sign (port not open)

Just for starters, Can you only have port forwarding on a static IP address ?

cheers

The IP address that you specify in the router port forward config is the IP address of the computer running Utorrent.

On the PC open a command prompt (black box) and type "ipconfig" (without the quotes) ensure that the IP Address listed is the same as the one you are using in the router config.

That is the only thing you need to make sure is correct

Hi, is the machine running utorrent always 192.168.1.3 ? If not then that's your first setup ;0 reverve ip in router so it's the same everytime.

Your static ip is your actual isp ip so dont worry about that one at all.

Are you downloading from a decent site as that also might be a problem.

Have you enabled protocol encyption in utorrent, this also helps quite a bit with speed issues ;)

Oh and is this what you've been trying to catch me about, lol.

been having same problem, after reading this ive just got it up & running
thanks 2 all of u

Guys, i really appreciate your help here.
right just want to check something with youz all.

If i am running my wireless connection, and i type in cmd/ipconfig, i assume i am looking for my wireless ip address which is (ethernet adaptor wireless network connection) (192.168.1.2) this is what come up in the black box.
This is what i put in as my IP address in port forwarding ?, as this stays the same all the time i remain on the wireless connection

**************************************
Can i assume, if i was to connect my ethernet cable , then this would change, as i would have a different IP address if i wasnt using my wireless router.
If so, i am assuming being a Virgin Media customer, if i was using a wired connection, everytime i booted up my laptop, i would have a different IP address everytime.?

Is this the part you then need a static IP address?

cheers

tom

Here's what I'd do:

Disable DHCP Server on the Router
Assign a different static IP address to each of your adapters (both ethernet and wireless) on your PC.
Ensure that your Default Gateway on your PC is set to be the IP address of the router.

Only use ONE adapter at a time. DO NOT USE BOTH AT THE SAME TIME!!

Disable whichever one you don't want to use.

Good luck
