To be most secure when you set up the encryption make sure you choose WPA or WPA2 rather than WEP. If you choose WPA2 (best option) you will probably need to install this update http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893357 first. Make sure you choose a long password made up of lowercase upercase symbols and numbers.

WEP is simple to break by anyone with the right software. WPA2 with a strong password is unlikely to be cracked by anyone.

I find the best way of securing a wireless network is by MAC address, providing you know exactly who should be using it :)

Sorry I am not trying to hijack this thread but I've just installed this update but can't see any settings for WAP2 encription. How would I change these settings?
Thanks

Not a good way of securing it. Anyone with the right software can see what MAC addresses are connected to the access point, clone them to their own wireless card, and pretend to be an allowed user.

Not really familiar with the Belkin products, but you should find it on the config page for your router. Usually at http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.1.1. There'll be an encryption tab or section on the page and it will be in there. Once you have enabled it Windows will automatically recognise that it's set to WPA2 and will just prompt you for the key.

If your router is old, it's likely it won't support it. It's also possible that there is a firmware upgrade available that will enable it.

Its few years old and I have already updated the firmware but don't see any WPA2 encryption so it looks like it doesn't support WPA2. I am using MAC address filtering, so I think its secured enough but cheers for your quick reply.
Thanks

As I said in a previous reply, MAC address filtering shouldnt really be considered as secure.

Were you able to find WEP and WPA on the config page? It will almost certainly have WEP in there somewhere, If you can't find it then you're probably looking in the wrong place. If you can't use WPA or WPA2 then WEP although fairly easily cracked is better than nothing at all.

I am using 64bit WEP but cant see WPA2 in security settings so it doesn't support.
Thanks
