Total noob question, as we own a Wi (not touched) and it very rarely comes out what are the advantages of softmodding it, what does it give you? what can you do extra with it, im sure there is more to the Wi than bloody ten pin bowling lol.

The last thing i softmodded was the original Xbox with splinter cell to get XBMC are we talking on the same lines here?

Any advice would be appreciated.

softmodding is mainly used so you can play pirated games

I softmodded our Wii so I wouldn't have to keep swapping discs, getting them scratched and turning €45 of game into a coaster, just run them from the USB drive. Hard to believe how many times a 7 year old can drop a disc and it land data side down (usually on a piece of lego)

Quicker loading and no disc swapping: seeing as the Wii is seen as a kids console, Nintendo should build it into the Wii in the first place!

Cheers for replies so not much else really then, bar playing copied games a bit disappointed to be honest.

there are also apps for using your wii to play dvds...

and there is also emulaters for older consoles snes etc.

if you softmod and put cfg loader on it then you can store hundreds of games on your hd so no disks are required.

once its set up it looks fantastic, the game covers appear on screen, you just point the wii remote to desired game and start.

if you have young kids its great for them to use,
in the game options, there are cheats available to make life easier for the younger kids....

you can also change the wii backgrounds and plenty of themes are free to download.

you can also do a couple of surprising things without modding.

i was surprised to find out that you can use your wii for bbci player and also install opera browser via the wii shop....

tbh the bbci picture quality isnt great, but still something.. :)

there is loads of quirky homebrew apps and there is one app that connects to the net and searches for them. cant remember what its called now.

ive also seen a zx spectrum emulator ....

couldnt get it to work for some reason lol

Yes there is alot you can do with a modded Wii. You will play it more and all the games u can get is great when u just download them and with the click of 2 buttons u have 100s of games to choose from.

Once u have a hard drive on the wii you will wonder why u didnt do it a long time ago.

You will be able to softmod it for free and for the price of a game (£30) you can buy a 500GB hard drive and have all the games stored in a single place. Looks great to when friends come round as u can show off a bit. :proud:

Best thing Buzzer ever did.

Wasn't it called Pimp My Wii ? The program that you click to run a diagnostic on your system for outdated softmod things and it auto updates all your stuff. Excellent piece of code that.

And yeah if you have a Wii don't ask questions just bloody softmod it! Shouldn't cost you owt and even if it does you make it back on your first pirated game lol. Which is another thing, if you want proper games to play on your Wii if you don't already have them you want to be getting any or all of these:

Super Mario Galaxy 2, Legend Of Zelda Twilight Princess, Goldeneye 007, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Metroid Other M, Project Zero 4 (English patched) and there's probably a few I've forgotten to mention but all those are proper Wii games not your average family title like Wii Sports (which btw is a class act itself!). ;)

Also modding your Wii is great for changing things like the front end's appearance and what not, for example I have the default skin it comes with but all black in colour with blue trim and white text and the game's channels manually loaded to the main screen, it looks very nice.

no m8, this is just for looking for new homebrew apps.

its called homebrew browser lol , how did i manage to forget that????

anyway here it is,

View attachment 57336

just extract to your apps folder in sd card and launch it from homebrew channel.
it will go online (provided you have wi fi set up) and browse all available homebrew apps....

the controls are a bit fiddly and take a bit of getting used to.
also i cant make head nor tail of the help folder... lol
