Evening All,

My neighbour has just been given a black wii from the states and asked if i could softmod it for him and i said i'd try depending on what f/w was on it.

He said he hadn't updated it at all but when i checked, it says the f/w is 4.3u so he must have updated using a retail disc or somin and not realised!

Is there anything different I have to do with this wii considering its black and from the states in order to update it?? Also will my PAL backups work on it after the softmod??

Thanks in advance for your time and help, any advise on this would be great.

Being a US console wont make any difference mate. You will still need the indy game, or the yu-gi-oh game to mod it.

I'm assuming I would have to get NTSC versions of either game for it to work or will a PAL blockbuster rental work for me??

I aint sure tbh mate. I dont know if the wii is region locked. Ask moamb or one Bro mate. They know more than I do.

black wii : it will have to play games from USB only too as it has the newer drives in.

i play ntsc games on my PAL console

Hi,

Pretty sure you'll need the NTSC disc cos Wii is region locked: Smash Bros Brawl I think has the hack for it (Indy for Pal).

Once it's unlocked you can mount any version on a USB disc (scrubbed) and run it, just need to get homebrew on it first.

ok, so cos it's region locked I'll have to get an NTSC version of indy or the other game mentioned to downgrade it and put homebrew on it but once i got homebrew on it I can do the usb thing and backup my games to an external HD whether them being NTSC or PAL and I should be good to go?

If I ever wanted to play PAL backups via CD's I would have to get an original NTSC version of super smash brawl also and implement another hack to make it region free?? If so, anyone got a tutorial or can point me in the direction of a tutorial which can show me how to implement this???

Thanks for your advice and replies!

not 100 % but i dont think black wii play dvd-r m8 so no disc backups (hdd is way better)

I think the easiest thing for you would be to download and run ModMiii: run the wizard and follow the instructions. You'll need an NTSC version of Super Smash Bros Brawl, Lego Indiana Jones or Yu Gi oh 5ds to do it. Dont know how easy it'll be to get your hands on these games: Lego Indy is as rare as hens teeth here: people are selling it for up to £100 a pop on fleabay.

Once modded with a USB launcher installed, you can backup any original game but black Wii's cant read DVD-r without changing the laser, so its original discs or downloaded files.

Pretty sure I'm right, but I'd wait for Buzzer or Ray to confirm this for you. They kno a lot more about this than me! :Biggrin2::Biggrin2:

Change the drive mate add a cheap wii clip to it do the hack using a copied NTSC game to enable USB loader or just use disks but I would change drive easy to do and cheaper then finding a game that works the hack

not so sure its the laser, more the board screwed to the drive that needs changing, thats what tells the laser what to read
