Hi Guys,

so a while ago i decided to get myself a domain name & web site builder package. Not knowing much about designing my own website i took a chance on "fast hosting direct" with No Limits Control center. I have the 2 year deal......

I have figured out the very basics, ie have the web mail sort of set up & a very basic web site designed. Basically i have just gone self employed & want to build a nice looking website with the ability to promote & sell things from.

Thing is I carnt figure out how the hell to use the web builder etc, it just seems very hard & confusing???

question is, has any1 had experience with creating a website with this company?

Should i ditch it & try another hosting site?

if i did change to another hosting site could i keep my domain name???

here is my website address so you can see for yourselfs how crap it looks atm.....lol

Welcome

Pic is only for testing, not a good idea to put me with a pint in my hand on my about page.....lol

any help much aprechiated

ps i have worked with computers & software on & off for many years but this website building has got me stumpt!

cheers

Steve.....

As far as I'm aware you are not tied in to using their website builder,
you should be able to use any WYSIWYG web builder software,
I'm no expert but I'm sure one of the lads will know a bit more :)

cheers for the info wiz, can allways count on you for a quick responce......

not sure what WYSIWYG is though?

im just after setting up a simple website with the ability to advertise items with text/pic & accept payment (paypal or similar)

im sure one of the web tech guys will sort me out....

TBH, I wouldn't have chosen them as there is no specific e-commerce option and building from scratch will take a LONG time :) For example, you'll need a database back-end for product catalogue and payment gateways...

Since you already have it what about a 1-click install of Wordpress and add the e-commerce option from Getshopped ?

That way you'll get something you can quickly generate pages with, add pictures and take payments with minimal effort - there's still a bit of a learning curve but the hairy stuff under the bonnet stays hidden!

If you want to change take a look at sites that offer Prestashop with 1-click install - example Kates Equestrian Services (one I'm working on) - or a hosting site with a specific e-commerce offering such as Zen Cart....

Cheers for the info, think its a big lerning curve for me. No idea what these 1 click install cgi things are (Wordpress etc). there is a whole set of them in the control panel that i could install but after having a quick look i dont really understand what i am doing.

will have a play with installing the wordpress one & see if anything makes sense.....

cheers

Check for an e-commerce one - I can only see the ad stuff unless I join up :)

looking at the bumph on fasthosting direct, you get joomla so you can add zencart or virtuemart or even oscommerce

Re: Fast hosting direct..... "no limits control" strugling to make my website help...

I think it is a good hosting site, its just the web design that i carnt seem to master.....

After a lot of reading I am now having a go with the WYSIWYG "Kompoz" to design my site. I am starting with the tuts & starting to get a feel for it.

Not sure what joomla is atm but there are a lot of these cgi 1 click installs within fast hosting direct, hopefully in time i will understand them more & be able to use them within my web site.

cheers

Joomla! is a web environment with built-in content management (makes it easy to write your pages). This is a Joomla! site. You can add modules to it that enhance what it can do. Zen cart, virtuemart and oscommerce are all well-known e-commerce environments. Zen and oscommerce can be used standalone while virtuemart should be integrated into Joomla! If the primary objective is to sell stuff I'd skip the Joomla! bit and go for a standalone solution like Zen or oscommerce - why make it harder than it need be?

While you can use them WITHIN your own site they are really intended to BE your own site...at some point you'll have interface to some payment gateway(s) and while Kompozer will enable you to write the code, linking to the Paypal API (the gateway interface) is not the best way to lose a large part of your life :)

To be honest I would NOT recommend Wordpress to someone who has never studied PHP. Before building websites from scratch you need to learn HTML and CSS. If I was you I would look in to using a company that allows you to purchase a website builder where you can edit it. All it takes then is your images and text. You will get so confused over HTML and CSS that it will drive you insane. HTML - Hypertext Markup Langauge and CSS - Cascading Style Sheet and you haven't even learnt PHP - Hypertext Processor yet :(

Have a look here and see what you think of learning this stuff W3Schools Online Web Tutorials
