Hi guys, just wondering how i watch the films off my external hdd when plugged into my vu solo 2.do I need a movie player plugin or something?

I just use the built in player you use to play recordings, just change location to the drive and away you go. Not had any real problems except with ViX at the moment where if you skip forwards or backwards using the 1 or 3 buttons the audio sometimes stops, you then have to stop, then play and resume to get the audio back.

Yea was thinking I could do that, but when I go to change location it's not there, only the internal hdd is there with my tv recordings on.

Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

What format is ur external in?

I have a feeling its probably in NTFS if its not showing up in locations.

If u can access the vix plugin feeds download and install ntfs-3g
That will allow u to read and write to NTFS formatted drive.

Let me know how u get on.

What image are you using? As said above the default vix image won't mount an ntfs formatted drive. For the older you need ntfs-3g and another package whose name I can't remember but when you try and install it it will complain. For the newer vix images there is read only support provided by installing another package whose name I can't remember off the top of my head. I think I added the steps in a thread on the vix image in the downloads section if you want to take a look.

think you scan your network for storage devices in network mount?

Just checked on my laptop, for older ViX images you need the packages:

libfuse2 and ntfs-3g

for newer images you just need but this only gives you read only access

libntfs

Im using vix Helios, build 010,kernel 3.3.8 it's a clone build from AJT off here.i went to initialisation and it was showing up in there, so i initialised it and it formatted the hdd i think, because it sows up now in locations but I lost all my stuff off there :-(

Yes, initialisation basically formats it for linux and remounts it. You have lost everything i'm afraid.

Gutted for you mate :( we've all done it lost important stuff in the past

hopefully you can get back some stuff ?

Before you do anything else and copy any data onto it I'd do a Google to see if it's possible to get your data back.

bugger a day late as i saw this posted yesterday " giveaway of the day "

Syncios Data Recovery is a powerful data recovery tool which can recover almost all data.

It probably is possible to recover some data but it wont be easy and possibly expensive for the software.

What wouldn't help i'm guessing is that you've gone from one file type system to another.

I'm not too familar with file system as used by E2 boxes and what is involved when formatting with this type of filesystem.

nevermind guys lesson learned:Chainsaw:. got a couple of hours spare so going to mess about getting it recognised in locations ready to start again lol.thanks for the replys and if i get stuck.... i`ll be back.

So guys the hdd is in ntfs format and thats why it wont read it im guessing from what your saying, but where do i dowload these from libfuse2 and ntfs-3g.Cant seem to find them anywhere.

If drive is still in ntfs format then you may still be able to recover from the format.

Just google:

I haven't used any of the software that is listed so can't comment on how useful it may (or may not) be.

thanks ketmp.all im looking for now is to use it to read from, plug in and watch the films off it if possible?

So i'm clear you want to use an external HDD to record/playback your recording but also transfer stuff you have downloaded from your laptop/PC to your external drive so you can watch it via your solo2?

I'm not too sure about Helios and which versions you need but I've attached libfuse2/libntfs/ntfs-3g which I used to used for ViX3.0 808 and kernel-module-ntfs which I use for ViX Apollo 165. As I said earlier the kernel module for the newer ViX Apollo image only provides read-only access to an NTFS formatted drive.

Just copy the relevant ipk files to /tmp and then do a local extension install.
