Hi

So I had a clone, put a clonesafe image on it, sold it on auction. Worked fine when I sold it, I used it for a week or two on Helios clone safe image, the guy bought it and received it about 3 days ago, and demands a refund because his saying it doesnt work, basically describes the symptoms of a bricked box. Now I told him numerous times not to update, but being a loonatic he did but refuses to accept he did.

Im going to have to pay for his postage costs to get this back, when I know im not at fault, but to prevent people falling in the trap with these obnoxious buyers, does anyone have the faintest idea how you can prevent someone updating their box, whether it be using plugins or a file put on box via ftp to prevent it detecting USB, prevent flashing images, prevent updating over the menu?

It is so annoying.

Thank you for reading.

best advice mate is dont touch clone boxes and if you do dont sell them on ebay
as it will always bite you.

no really mate you could change ftp pass and put on parental controls but apart from that not much
and there is always ways around everything on these boxes

The problem is s that there are settings within the image to disable checks for updates but that can easily be changed with just a few remote clicks.

You could find out the site that say Helios connects to and in /etc/hosts create an alias for that site which points back to localhost, this would stop the box connecting to the site but if that same site is also used for plugins then this change would also disable that.

Lastly, it may be possible to frig the image not to do an update but what's to stop the person downloading an image and re-flashing the box with that image, box becomes bricked but you have no proof that that was what was done?

Did you ad on ebay mention that it was a clone or Chinese copy? Not too sure what ebays stance on this would be but I do know that if the guy thought he was buying an original then if he reports to ebay that it's a clone then you'll lose both the box and your money.

I think the words of the previous reply were wise, don't flog these boxes to unsuspecting punters on ebay.

Hi thanks for that. Both responses been great so far.

I did mention a million times its a clone, and I said dont update, so many times, but this idiot obviously felt like experimenting.

Now I ask, if there is any way of proving he updated the box? even though I told him not to?

you can tell if box was updated, get a USB stick with a LED on it, usually the box will check usb so to flash , so the led will flicker, if it doesnt can safely say its been wiped so cant even read usb ,

also you can use older images which are no longer supported so there updates menu wouldnt work

Thanks

Thats the whole bloody point of these boxes, thats like buying a car and being told you cant drive it. basically no matter how it happened you are the one at fault for selling the clone in the first place and no one not ebay nor the small claims court will see it any differently.

if you told in your ebay ad that it was a clone
then he and others bid on a clone
then he made the best bid and won a clone
and he updated the image himself
he knew what he was buying
now its gone tits up

tell him to get stuffed

He'll have to be nice to him as if the buyer knows the ebay rules on clones then the OP will lose both the box and the buyer will be refunded.

If its ebay.. and they have done a claim against you
Accept the return..
and he will have to pay to send back ro ebay should give him a prepaid label

It's against the rules of eBay to sell fake counterfeit products on there. Your not in act position to fight the buyer on this one.

Exactly, people seem to be forgetting that they are essentially selling illegal goods, regardless of whether the buyer knows this or not, the seller will always loose in these situations, just be thankful the buyer has not reported the seller to trading standards.

So wait, its illegal to sell a clone in the UK and on ebay? can anyone point me in the right direction as to where about it says that? I didn't have the slightest clue. There are masses of ebay sellers selling clones of tshirts, clones of boxes, I even did a quick search on google "selling clones on ebay" and couldnt really find anything.

Please advise Thanks.

i would still tell him to get stuffed

you sold him a working box

and he fooked it up by updating it

now he wants ebay rules
loads of fake goods on ebay
and they know it

if you put this VU+ Solo2 in ebay and click search
you get at the very top of the page 2 solo2 clones
saying that they are clones

Point is, he isnt admitting to it. He knew what he did, just by the way he talks you can tell his shitting himself. But I dont want to refund him - he will get his money, I get a box which I then have to cement to my house as its become a black brick.

You can get a chip and get it up and running surely.

of course its illegal, by definition of a clone you are selling counterfeit goods, there is no two ways about it.

Under the Sale of Goods Act, goods must be sold as described, of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose.
A trader may have committed a criminal offence by selling you fake goods, or by giving you a false description or statement of the goods and you may be entitled to a refund or exchange of goods.

Go through the returns process
Then get it fixed or sell on as broken.
Just chalk it to experience.
If he gets someone to write him a slip that its counterfeit it quite likely he will have the box and money..
