OK I've stuck my neck out, and this is my first Linux box,(due in the next day or 2) after many years of TM standard usage, with softcams

Because I live in rural France, broadband is poor and very variable even then, with internet streaming almost totally impossible, so direct sat broadcasts are the only solution

I have a motorised dish, and want to use softcams (I suppose this is right) for footie watching mostly.

The supplier says that a Vix will be pre-installed (no details as yet)

So what do I read, what should I download, bearing in mind that I saw Linux many many years ago, and have never used it in anger

BTW I want it to be as simple as poss for my missus to use as well, to replace the TM with her fav channels on 28E

Thanks in advance

Hi Ferret, just got box and connected to sat ok and can see certain channels

Connection to LAN says its working and certainly there is traffic, but suspect some LAN prob since cannot see PCs and cannot see STB from PCs

Have downloaded dreamset v.2.4.2 to usb on PC and have tried to load on stb, but cannot see dreamset or usb correctly - stuck

Dreamset is a pc program use it from your pc follow the guide i linked to.

Sorry Ferret but am unable to run dreamset after extraction

have tried both x64 and other version, and windows says 'unable to run this '

Am running 8.1 32bit x64 machine

Thanks for any advice

Running 8.1 may be the problem is there a win7 compatibility mode in windows 8 you can use ?

If not then try Dreamboxedit.

Thanks Ferret for info

Eventually got lan working

dreamboxedit works, and have backed up, then loaded catseyes onto vu, and 2 sats at least are working

Next bit is a cam of some type. Which do you recommend - with my low broadband, I want a satellite route to things only

Cheers

if ur sat is on 28E , there are no keys which will open the channels .
So best install cccam for cardsharing

CCcam is the easiest option if you just using a line or 2 maybe use that to get you up and running. After that read and learn about Oscam and how to set that up it is the best option currently still supported but a lot more complicated to setup.

Hi again Ferret

I have created my own bouquet to satisfy the missus for the moment

I have, by luck, downloaded plugins to update Vix to latest version, so how do I back this up to PC?.

Im sorry I cant find a reasonable description of Cccam or Oscam, in spite of having looked at several threads , so a link would be appreciated

No problem in finding lots of threads on both use of both, and downloaded ipks to my PC, but until I can understand enough , I do not want to try downloads onto stb, using DBE

Also, from some of the threads, people are using command lines to control the stb, and I have not found a way to get to a command line prompt. Is this necessary or does DBE do everything I need

Thanks again

Vix has a inbuilt backup plugin to backup the whole image run that then FTP in and transfer the backup to you PC.

To be fair though those versions of VIX for the SE are not the best as they are converted images not built for the SE. You be better of with OpenATV

Command lines are usually sent via telnet by a program named puttytel or the telnet app in DCC Dream Box Control Centre

TBH have not seen that amongst the plugins - will look again

Will look at that option

Ah I've now found this facility in DBE

HI Ferret - I've been busy with visitors and not spent much time trying things

Story so far - stb still on original Vix , updated by stb itself to latest June 2015 version

Cannot do full backup of Vix, which errors in /usr/lib/dvapp2/python/plugins/Extensions/BackupsuiteHDD/message.py 'no such file or directory' when I try invoke plugin backup via USB,

and using file display on stb there is no entry in the hierarchy for ...BackupsuiteHDD.

however there is a directory for /usr/lib/dvapp2/python/plugins/Extensions/BackupsuiteUSB/

-------------------

(I have downloaded OpenATV image to pc but won't try it until can backup Vix if that is possible)

-------------------

Have read the Oscam wiki, and how to configure Oscam for DM500S so that is now clearer, so I could try to instal Oscam-Emu under Vix, but wish to check with you
various things

a. If only using Emu , do I need access to a card on someone's server - I presume not

b. the order of doing things, from the downloads found here seems to be

1. I need to create some oscam folders using DBE before sending files from pc?

2. I have downloaded oscam-emu https://www.digitalworldz.co.uk/index.php?resources/3387/ to pc, so will use DBE to transfer to stb to a specific folder in /tmp

3. I can start oscam instal in /tmp from DBE, and it will be installed in etc/tuxbox/config/oscam

4. have downloaded oscam.keys to pc, then need to transfer using DBE

5. do I need softcam feed https://www.digitalworldz.co.uk/index.php?resources/3305/ ? to automate the keys update, or is that incorporated in oscam-emu ?

Thanks again for all of your help

I have now installed openatv 5.0

Have downloaded and installed enigma2-plugin-cams-oscam-emu-svn10656_openatv_all, and I can see all files installed in directory tuxbox/config

What do I do next to get oscam-emu running please?

Can someone help please - have made lots of progress but clearly something is still wrong

I seem to have emu working after a fashion but cannot understand what is wrong -

I have created a new channel in bouquet based upon an existing one but when I select it there is zero signal strength indicated on tv

also using oscamstatus access to clients, servers, log are all forbidden

oscam.log file is not found as in oscam.conf but in /var/log -see later
