Hi

Looking at getting a solo after xmas so a few questions

Does this box do network mounts ?
What file types does it play through a network mount avi, mkv etc ?
If it does do I need to run vlc etc on my pc ?

Don't worry about who's questions are answered 1st, just a few answers would be nice please.

can I also jump in and ask
is recording faultless ?
does widescreen switch between 16:9/4:3 broadcasts
is wifi cheap ?
basicly does it do all it states it will do :)
cheers
please answer ellie10998 first lol

I think we are both on about the Solo Box here guys

I haven't got a solo ive got the Duo but they are pretty much the same.
The answers to all the questions are yes'
At the moment the streaming has to be done with VLC but its being worked on.
Recording is faultless at least on my box it is.
TBH these boxes are as near to Sky boxes as you can get in operation so anything you can do with a sky box you can do with the Vuo and MUCH MUCH more
Edit
Btw i've never had to set up a network mount on mine, I just use the hardrive i fitted.
If you get one let me know and i'll tell you how to set up Vlc on it

I am using the duo with Vix image and WIFI is perfect using a TP-Link TL-WN321G that cost me about £8 delivered of ebay. I think this will be the same for the solo, but would strongly sugest you spend the extra £100 and get the duo you will not regret it.

I got one for a freind last week of ebay for new £345 delivered, thats £65 cheaper than I paid for mine 6 months ago and I think it was a bargain at the price I paid.

oops forgot to mention the answer to ellie1998 yes to all, but as above still buy a duo.

The reason i bought a Duo was because i had the Sky + hd box and i didn't want the mrs moaning that the Sky box was better and she hasn't.
It's a great box

And yes to all your's Rat,
dont have any first hand experience with wifi though,
read about other people having joy with them though,

Regards,
Crazy.

is Network Mount fixed on this as yet ?
cheers

Dont think there are any isues with mounting a network drive but not tryed it as i have a 2tb drive in the box. I will give it a try later think I have a NAS drive knocking about somewhere.

Never had any issues with Network Mount, got it mounted to my NAS drive fine and previously had my NAS set up to be the default HDD for recording etc before I got an internal HDD.

Can someone advise me on a Box as a NAS.
was considering using the DM800HD as a NAS instead of coughing up for an extra device.

What do you guys think?

I've got two of these Buffalo LinkStation Live 1TB MultiMedia Network Attached Storage with Built-In BitTorrent Client: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories (if you look at the options on the right Amazon sell them themselves for 87 quid delivered, don't know why the more expensive third party price is default)

I had a third one but I left it in a box somewhere when I lived in Malta lol. It is networked attached and has Bittorrent built in to download your files without a computer, that's all I really need although it does a lot more.

I've got mine set up so I can access it from outside the house via web browser, so in the Airport on my way home from work I set it to download a couple of MKV torrents through my Iphone browser then by the time I'm home i'm ready to play them straight through my VU+, taking a computer right out of the equation (unless the bastarding things have been RARed, don't get me started about RARs!)

A dedicated NAS device is obviously the bomb.
Personally i wouldnt purchase that one in particular if i was gonna fork out the money anyway.

i was thinking that satellite recievers etc have some amount of processing power and might suffice.

I got mine delivered to my office in Guernsey tax free so was just over 70 quid each which was the main thing I took into consideration when I bought my last two. The first one I bought about 18 months earlier (exactly the same device) was 170 quid and had firmware issues which they seemed to fix now. There are better NAS drives on the market but the 70 quid price and past experience swung it for me.

I've seen hints that the new Gemini image (or plugin as it were) for the DM800 has bittorrent built into it. With a decent size hard drive inside it and and the NTFS server plugin set up (I could never get this working myself, with only about 20 mins trying to be fair) then it should work exactly like the above NAS.

But unless you have the components lying around already I would question the logic of buying new components when NAS drives themselves are getting relatively cheap.

Bittorrent is not a problem,
look up transmission. it is a bad ass.

I want a fully fledged NAS primarily for storing and streaming TV shows and movies. while at the same time allowing bittorrent download.

I understand that any reciever can do this.

just abit concerned with regards to xfer rates if i was to go this route.

DM800HD has a standard 10/100 Mbps Ethernet interface on board. I've watched 1080p 11gig files through my network fine with this restriction mind, not sure how well it would perform if it had other stuff transferring in the background though.
