Valve have said Xi3's Piston will not be the only Steambox on market. Rumours are to expect Steambox offerings from the big box manufacturers too.

Valve say they have no current plans to launch their own Steambox in 2013 (my emphasis). But one is in the works, and it will be Linux based - though owners "will be able to install Windows" (so expect an x86/x64 offering).

It looks like "Steambox" will be a licensable trademark, much like HDMI and Ultrabook are. Which is probably why the Xi3 spokesperson was so careful to not use the phrase in the CES videos.

Xi3 have started taking pre-orders for Piston.
Current specs are:

  • [*=1]Windows 7 with custom shell and Steam pre-installed.
    [*=1]128GB SSD.
    [*=1]8GB RAM.
    [*=1]AMD R464 3.2Ghz Quad Core APU.
Price: $899.99

Crazy pricing! You could build a small good looking system with a much better spec and have it boot straight into steam big picture for a lot less money!

It's not really that crazy pricing when you look at what the box is , it's a tiny tiny tiny modula pc , the price is always going to be more then a normal system , steam have sort of back peddled on this recently and dropped all association with xi3
Xi3 says Piston is 'something more' than Steam Box - JoyStiq

yeah its a small system, but an itx board would fit in something acceptably small aswell, afterall, people build them into nes's and snes's. The thing that makes this stupid though, is that its windows based so there really is no reason at all to buy it!

While I agree there is no reason to buy it , a nes or snes is still massive compared to this , but it's all kinda irrelevant to this thread as this is not the valve steam box, if there ever will be one
