Not used satellite TV for a few years, so pretty much clueless as to what's now available. My questions are basically what are the benefits of buying something like a VU box over the standard "off the shelf" Humax box? I only mention VU as that's what I've seen on fleabay, so if there is a big difference between these, what is the best box that is fairly idiot proof to have without spending a fortune? Any advise appreciated.

Is freesat all your wanting ? If so then the VU/Enigma 2 boxes offer less than a Freesat box if Freesat is all your wanting.

VU/Enigma 2 boxes are kind of specialist boxes set up correctly with connection over the internet and or subscription cards then they are capable of clearing encrypted channels.

Thanks for the reply. It is mainly freesat, however if there are extras to be had than I suppose that would be a bonus. When you say enigma boxes offer less, do you mean in terms of channels available? Also is it possible to set up on demand features like BBC iplayer etc?

Enigma boxes do not have the ease of plug and play that freesat boxes do, but with tinkering will give you the channels that you would normally only get with a sub, so it depends what you want

Vu+ Zero is a nice little box for £99 you can use ABM plugin to scan just freesat and if you want more later after doing some research you won't be disappointed. You will only get FTA HD channels. Add USB drive and you can record.

Depends what your looking for. If you want something that's no nonsense and just watch TV then go with a normal freesat box if you want a bit more and don't mind playing then a Vu+ Zero would be my suggestion. Depending on what you want to spend of course.

Much cheaper boxes out there but I have no experience with them.

Thanks for that, the one I was looking at is a VU Solo SE V2, not sure what the difference is between them

I have decided to go with the Solo 2 SE. Just one further question however, they are being advertised as being shipped with a choice of either Vix or Black hole image pre-loaded. Having no experience of using either, is one any better than the other for a beginner?

I like openvix personally very easy to use and set up. I haven't used black hole for years.
