zenwifi vpn issue

Ive just got myself a new Zenwifi CT8 - have an issue setting up VPN client - using nordvpn - just disconnects the internet? old ac56U was fine although had merlin firmware - which apparently wont be coming to zenwifi - ive followed the usual nordvpn setup soon as i activate the vpn the WAN connection goes. The old router with the merlin firmware let you set particular clients via vpn but hes already said he wouldnt be creating one for zenwifi routers due to a different chipset.

so could it be VM disconnecting when it detects someone enabling vpn at the router level? or some config silliness? Can i plug my old ac56u and just use that for routing vpn traffic?

Not the same thing as a router but this is what my Enigma 2 box does when using nord and openvpn.
I have to manualy set the the Nord DNS to gain internet access back in Openvpn.
Not sure if it will help but here is the DNS for Nord.
