WTD 3D design software

Evening all dose any one know of a good 3D design program?
as my lad is in a competition at school and has to design a climbing wall
and i thought it would be good for him to have a go at doing it on the computer.

3D Studio Max and Lightwave 3D, are the best about and is what they use in the companies. It's not that hard to get your head round. I did some years ago and there was some good online tut sites which help you out, step by step stuff.
Tbh tho depends on the timescale of how long you lad has to do it all. Could take a few weeks to get his head round it all lol
