In my opinion, Windows Defender is enough if you are a careful person. If you aren't, maybe a product with more feedback, that help identify suspect behavior.

since win 10 came out ive just stuck with windows defender, and I haven't had any problems yet.

as long as you keep away from those porn sites and don't d/l lots of cracked software cause you don't want to pay, and as said before a bit of common sense
you will be fine :)

I've been using Avast but after reading the posts here, I think maybe I should have a rethink?

Windows 10 has defender built in..I just use that and never had any issues and I do some well dodgy browsing and downloading..I find these additional security suites hamper and slow down your computer due to massive footprint...
I do have malwarebytes running as well just in case but that's all..

Just noticed the bit about avoiding potentially dangerous plug-ins like Java.
Not sure what this means, what exactly is dangerous about Java?

Because it's a popular and in most cases needed application not very nice people use Java as a front to con you install crap on your computer and gain access to your accounts and personal info etc and all you thought you were doing was updating Java.
This is what is dangerous about Java and many popular windows applications.

Thanks AJT, that is a worry because obviously all applications need updating at some time.
Also, as you say, Java is very often needed.
Should we all dump it or are there precautions to take which enable it to be used safely ?
Sorry if this is a bit basic but I am not well up on these things.

If you are being told that you need to update Java or any application just do it manually by navigating to the relevant site yourself and update that way if one is required.
I'm always suspicious when I get notices of Click here to update etc etc..
So I go to the site myself to check I do this with everything less windows updates.
If you have any type of downloaded application then before running or unzipping scan downloaded file with free edition of malwarebytes this will flag up any nastys.
Always be suspious of "exe" files

That's good info and much appreciated.
I will get malwarebytes asap.
