DAVID WEIR has been called up into the Scotland squad for the first time by new national manager Craig Levein.

Some had predicted the 40-year-old Rangers defender might not feature for his country again given his last appearance was in the 1-0 home defeat to Holland a year ago.

But following a sound start to the season, the Ibrox skipper has been listed in the pool for forthcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers against Lithuania and Liechtenstein.

Of course, Weir won his 50th cap for his country at the same S. Darius and S. Girenas Stadium the Scots will play in next month back in September 2006.

The side won 2-1 under Walter Smith on that occasion and the ex-Everton defender will be hoping for the same sort of result if he features this time around.

Weir is one of an incredible eight Gers players who have been selected for the 26-man pool and is the most experienced. Three former Light Blues stars are also in the group.

Kirk Broadfoot, Kenny Miller, Steven Whittaker, Lee McCulloch, Allan McGregor and Andy Webster all join their skipper on Levein's list.

And Steven Naismith has been rewarded for his outstanding form recently with a recall after he missed the 3-0 friendly defeat to Sweden earlier this month in Stockholm.

Neil Alexander has been omitted, with Blackpool goalkeeper Matt Gilks coming in as the only uncapped player in his place.

But fellow Bloomfield Road star Charlie Adam is there along with his ex-Rangers colleagues Alan Hutton and Kris Boyd.
