I have been repairing and chipping psx for quite a number of years now and the worst thing that can happen is the lazer dies. At this stage you can do 1 of 2 things. Replace the laser at a cost of around 35 - 40 quid or you can ring Sony and have a fully refurbished machine to replace the faulty one for a total cost of £35 to your door. Up until recently, they replaced with like for like ie 5552 with 5552 or 7002 with 7002 but with the last few replacements i have got here, they have sent me a 102 ( PSOne ) !!!! So if you want to have a go, then ring the Sony repair dept on 0990 998877, tel them the machine is dead ( No green light ) and opt for the replacement .
One last thing, sometimes they dont collect the old machine, they never collect the leads and controllers AND if you own a 9002, the £35 is waived as the machine is still under the manufacturers warranty.
