I am lucky enough to live in an area that does not have VOD yet. I have hared rumors that VOD may be cracked with a dbox? Is this true, in the making or just bull?

Its sort of in the making..... we can receive VOD, but we cant order it. We can only watch what somebody else in the area has ordered..... but yes, its watchable.

Its mostly Front Row Movies in my area..... ;) [we're not on VOD yet... lol]
They refuse to upgrade Portsmouth to VOD at the moment because our talkback path is not consistent or something :)

The streams may be watchable but its not really very practical to sit around constantly scanning just hoping that someone is going to buy the movie you want to watch.

The only practical solution I can see to this is perhaps to record a whole transponder for 5 or 6 hours and then go through it and see what you've got. The vod channels appear to be consistantly on 3 or 4 transponders in my area so just select which you think may be th best.

Disk storage and throughput might be an issue though if you are trying to record upto 10 vod events at once - I'm guessing around 40Mbits/sec. So 4Mbytes/sec on disk = approx 14.5Gbytes per hour (guesswork !)

But you can't record a full transponder with a dbox and if you could theres no way the dbox is ever going to be able to stream around 8 channels at once on its 10mb network port.

Can I just ask - I live in Kirklees En tea ell area and its been VOD for ages now. I have an old bouquet file from when we got front row, are the transponders/frequencies the same for vod? If I do a scan of those frequencies will I find the VOD streams?
cheers

Thanks for pointing that out :)
Also would like to point out that the VOD encryption system has not been fully implemented yet so these currently watchable streams may well get encrypted eventually and we will be unable to watch.

Agreed, I don't think this approach could ever work on the Dbox. I think it would really have to be done using a dvb-c card straight onto your PC hard disk or maybe one of the newer pvr systems could be adapted.

As Liam points out though, you are probably wasting your time if you spend money on this kind of setup. If (when !) they bring the encryption system in you arent going to be watching these streams at all. The proposed encryption system is very secure and, by virtue of the fact its all controlled from their end, if it is ever cracked they could change it in a few days.

I think people are going to have to start realising that very likely within 18 months or so the cable hack is going to be largely history !
