The man who played Top Gear driver The Stig has joined rival show Fifth Gear.

Ben Collins, 35, will debut on the Five programme when the new series launches next week.

He will appear unmasked because The Stig is a BBC trademark.

'I'm delighted to be joining the Fifth Gear team,' he says. 'And I'm looking forward to a new set of exciting challenges...apparently with and without the helmet.

Former Formula Three star Ben was identified as The Stig last month after the BBC lost a High Court bid to block the publication of his forthcoming autobiography, in which he outs himself.

He is the second driver to take on the role - he slipped into the hot seat vacated by Formula 1's Perry McCarthy, 49, in 2003.

Top Gear bosses are expected to hire a new Stig now.

Fifth Gear starts on Friday 8 October at 7.30pm.

i know he only a fast driver and all that but where have peoples morals and honer gone.

i am sure the bbc explained he was going to be the stig and as such he would be required to to keep his trap shut and not divulge however tempting etc etc and then he signed a contract.

seems to me these contracts people sign are worthless really.

well i for one wont be watching filth gear i tried watching it before but all of the presenters get on my tits, i am not saying they are worse or better than top gear with their information but i just cant stand them.

you may be right ! the format and info may well be good its just the presenters just grate.

cant think of worse people to be stuck in a lift with tiff needle and vicky buttler henderson and the bloke with the beard whos name nobody knows....as you say just opinion.

stiil dont take anything away collins broke his contract end of, would you trust him ?

If he was under contract to not out himself then I am sure the BBC would have won the case, or at least sued him for breach of contract. Also the court case was between the BBC and the publishers, not Collins directly.

imo fifth gear is the motoring equivilant of the disney europa league. both deserve to be on channel 5 coz both are shite!

and what a tool this ben collins is.... shoulda kept his mouth shut imo.. he knew what was needed of him...

I like 5th Gear but don't watch it because I work shifts. I can see it one week but miss the next so I don't bother at all. Top Gear is the better show and on the best day for me.

Tiff Needell is so far up his own arse it's unbelievable. My mate is an Eligibility scrutineer with the B.T.R.D.A and works with many car organisations and rallies and has taken me to some of these where I've met the people. Vicki Butler is quite nice, which surprised me. Tiff as you can guess is a complete knob.
