Rangers and Celtic began with victories on the opening day of the SPL season, while Aberdeen thumped Hamilton.

St Mirren drew with Dundee United, and there was also a point apiece for Hearts and St Johnstone at Tynecastle.

The new season kicked off at lunchtime with Neil Lennon's Celtic edging out newly-promoted Inverness 1-0 away from home thanks to Paddy McCourt's goal in the 56th minute.

Defending champions Rangers, who included new signing James Beattie in their starting line-up, were also made to work for three points as they overcame Kilmarnock 2-1.

Aberdeen put a difficult 2009/10 campaign behind them to go top of the table on day one thanks to a convincing 4-0 victory over Hamilton at Pittodrie, with Paul Hartley netting a hat-trick of penalties.

Dundee United, third last season, needed a late equaliser from Jon Daly to hold St Mirren 1-1.

Hearts and St Johnstone played out a 1-1 draw as Sam Parkin's effort cancelled out a strike by Calum Elliot.
