i've been getting sum really slow surfing & download speeds on my 2mb connection recently. i dont think i've been infected with a virus. i did a couple of speed tests and they told me that my speed was 200k?!?!?! any explanation for these slow speeds?

First port of call would be to run a full system scan - a virus scan and a spyware scan (AdAware is good for the latter). Spyware is well known for slowing PC's down to a crawl.

have you tried any ping tests or tracert's? what sort of results you getting?

if these are fine then it may be spyware as mentioned above. if they aren't then it could still be spyware, but may be a router issue or an isp issue. You could have dns probs as well.

Try a full spyware clean first then an virus scan then try again.

Let us know which router/modem and which isp.

If Telewest is your ISP use the instant support tool, that will sort it out.

im on a 2MB tiscali broadband connection. i have a Sagem F@st usb modem. and it was fine for the first few months but recently, its been playing up.

i've done a few spyware & adware scans, and nothing has come up (using Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, and Avast!).

try pinging google or similar

go into dos prompt then type - ping www.google.com - your response times should be approx 40ms or less - if they are more then let us know.

Then try tracert www.google.com - this will tell you how your packets are being routed if it gets lost or is taking a long time then there might be an issue with your isp.

You could also try entering tiscalis DNS in your network connection and see if this makes an improvement.

i pinged google, and it gave me an average response time of 438ms :(

i did the tracert thingy, and it came up with a lot of stuff, too much to type out.

i am now getting ridiculously slow HTTP download speeds of 2k/s

i read online baout Zombie PC's been used for spamming purposes, and my PC seems to match the description. is there any good software to see i've been hijacked?

tiscali even now unlimited have a fair usage policy which you may want to read if you are downloading large amounts at peak times .if you break the fair usage policy the will throttle your downloads to less than dial up speeds on p2p but you surfing remain the same and downloads from http sites remain ok .

You need to copy and paste the tracert so that we can see the results. A tracert would show exactly where the delay is occuring! In command prompt type tracert www.bbc.co.uk and paste the results here!

1)if its a connection prob try increasing your TCP Recieve window using a program called Dr TCP, increase it to 1024960, and increase your TCP connections per server, windows default is 4 and the max is 30, i say increase it up to 14, but that all depends on the system, that should give you a boost of 100K at the start of a connection, then it should lower and stabilise after a while, this is also good for playing online games, turns your comp into an anti-lag machine.

or....

your comp may be being used as a bot, hackers basically use armies of bot pc's to attack thier targets, its the zombie pc's MA was on about but they are not used for mindless spamming, they are more or less coordinated, dont worry about any actual damage to your windows installation by this, as a hacker would use a simple hacker tool, but ive never heard of it slowing a comps speed down to around 2K, most ive heard is it slowing the speed down by about 5/10KB/s off the download speed, but it will slow your response time down, i say keep your anti-spyware and ant-viruses up-to-date and run Windows Update, they have provided fixes that place policies into your system that stop such things happening, just a little advice.
