BSkyB today (15 May) has put down its markers for the future of digital satellite in the UK. The third-quarter results show that 95 per cent of direct-to-home subscribers are digital. Open ...., the home-shopping service, will be integrated into Sky's interactive division.

The subscriber news is very positive: At 31 March 2001 the total number of DTH subscribers was 5,303,000 of which 95 per cent were digital. This leaves just 242,000 analogue customers. Intriguingly, the total for overall digital sales to 8 May was 5.4 million, which suggests that the market is still very robust. It all means, of course, that analogue switch-off is certain to come this summer.
