sky plus hd box recording after sub canc.

My full package sky sub is due to expire in Dec & I have no intention of renewing
when it goes up to the full price (I pay £25 at the mo :Clap
Im sure i read somewhere that if you disconect (or remove the card,not sure which) prior to your sub cancelling & leave for a week or so before connecting up again, the box works perfectly in regards to recording available freesat chans. I read that if left connected sky sends instructions to the box that renders the recording side of things unavailable. Can anyone confirm this ?

i did have a 'freesat' card that was an old expired sky card that recorded for about 3 months, then one day stopped

while it may work for a short while, itll only be temporary
