show us your fish tank

Thats not bad mate, My Fluval 405 Filter cost more than your entire setup, lol

already had lid and lights what i got of her mam,

tank £46.99
filter £27.99
heater £18.49
water conditioner £4.99
sand £15.75

total £114.21

If my Apple Snails keep breeding i should be able to send you some to start you off

ouch, wouldnt mind and external filter oneday

I have an External Fluval 305, that just needs a new seal, gonna put it on a car boot sale.

It started leaking on Xmas eve and under pressure it soon made a mess.

So had to go out and buy a Replacement system 10mins before they shut, lol

would it not make sense to buy the part for it and keep for spare, incase of another emergency :proud:

To be fair, you should set up the tank and let it stabalise before you buy fish anyway, lol

you need to do more than "stabilise" the tank for a couple of weeks. a cycle takes 3 or more weeks. an empty tank and a filter will never be ready, unless you feed the filter. so a tank of only water is no better for your fish, however long you run it for, than water straight out of the tap.

in the past we used "hardy" fish for the cycle. now it, more often than not, its a "fishless" cycle. you add ammonia to the tank had, over a few weeks, a bacterial colony develops. this colony feeds on the waste produced by your fish.
you can get round this with Marine, as you can use "live rock". but all other tanks need a cycle. and don't be conned by these "cycle in a bottle" products. they simply don't work.

I never had the new tank sydrome problem, simply because i bought mine complete with the fish, so i transported the fish along with two thirds of their tank water.

Then set up everything again this end Topping up with dechlorinated water.
I did add one of those bottles of Bacteria, as the filter was chocked solid and sponges black.

The old boy i bought it from was dying and i dont think he had touched the tank for 3 months at least.

We only lost one tiger barb 2 days after the move.

Now in starting to build up a more specialised species tank, even though its still a community tank.

I dont have any small fish that would be food for larger tank mates.

Just started geting into Rainbow Fish.

I will post some photos and a list of what i have in the tank.

i hyad one years ago, setup from new, never did any cycles, filled it ,let it to get to temp and then bought fish, all seemed good, this on i have put water conditioner in it then went round to my mams and got the filter out of hers, squeezed water out of it and pinched some gravel,i then undid the sealed container under my running filter, read somewhere also to add some fish food flakes every 12 hours,,,,,so much info and not much of it the same lol

yeah, "seeding" (using your mothers filter) works well. I've done a few that way. but my chosen way to cycle is the "outback special".
this is a tank 3/4 full of water. my choice of filter and heater. i then pi$$ in the tank and add a good handful of fine garden soil, i top up the err "ammonia" when the level drops to 0 ppm. i do this till i see nitrites. this indicates the first stage of the cycle is done. now when i add "ammonia", i check to see how long it takes to vanish. when the filter can process 10ppm in 12 hours, the filter is cycled. and another handy thought. its not the water or tank that's cycled. its the filter!!!!

though information varies. the need for a cycle is totally accepted, in the hobby. you will still find guy who have kept fish for 30 years. they tend to poo poo the idea of a cycle. but they would wouldn't they? after all, they are 30 years behind the times.
its often hard to change people who have that long of an experience. nobody like being told the views they have had for so many years are wrong. even though, in this case, they are.

just ordered some live plants for it,should take a week or two, these on are supposed to be easy growing with no feckin about with c02 and fertilizer

Vesicularis Dubyana (Java Moss)

Ilove post,s like this

My first tank well not really had loads before but no pics ,sure mickeyd has 1 of these a 24g D&D nano

I used to lol.

I now have a over 7ft tank now lol.

Must have been one of them nights binging, thought I would build a monster.

I just finsihed making the lid for it nearly a year on.

Here are some pics.

When I first set up the tank I had to cook the rock, not in a cooker lol... but I had to remove some really bad algae, and nasty little critters lol so it went in 2 dark dustbins with heaters and salt water for 3 months - when its done it is completely white with no coraline etc.

Great thread guys:

tank size was 48x18x15 with under gravel filter with 301 powerhead on uplift pipe each end of tank.two large rocks coverded the pipes.

had it running for about 6 years ,every 12 months i would take out and clean the 3 to 4 inches of mixed fine and large gravel, that took nearly all day but worth it in the end ,as you's all know nice n clean happy fish.
just a 20% change of water now n then was needed to keep right level of amonia n ph .
had dollars and a large pair of angle,s red tail shark and not forgeting the school of tetra and neon.looked smart at night and very relaxing at time's
will try to find a photo if it but didn't take many pics it was around 15 years ago when i had the tank so might be off a old photo
