I'm a bit of an ignoramus so could someone please clarify what the different serial cables are? I read lots about null modem cable and straight-through cables. whats the difference and when should each sort be used?

Yes, its for me Infinity progger, thanks for the clarification.

A null modem is not the same as a straight through serial cable, the null modem is a crossover cable (some of the wires inside cross) wheras the wires in a normal straight through serial lead go straight through (as the name suggests)
