sb5100 is it worth getting blackcat or can i use max233

Is there a diagram to make it?
I've got a picture of serial for sb1500 but it's so dark i can't make head nor tail of it?
I got a sb1500(got 2 actually) and i'm just itching to get my soldering iron out on it!!!
I get the impression i could use the max233 but cant find out where what goes???

10 way ribbon cable, 10 way idc socket, 25 pin printer plug
and shell should not cost more than £3 at maplins
I made 3 with 74hc244 & 100ohm resistors none worked
this worked first time

I dont know much about all this but i can read a diagarm.
I just found the chip on the internet and it cost 90 cents.
They make out the blackcat thig is something magical.
As far as i can see it's just a glorified max 233
