Brother in law has a ext hard drive that he uses on his Mac. Although it's powering and making the right noises it's not showing up on the Mac.

Silly question, can the files only be recovered using software on a Mac or could I do it on windows using the correct software.
I know how to do it if it was windows OS but I've never used a Mac before

depends on the format the drive is on. if it is in mac format you will have a tough time doing anything on windows with it.

if NTFS or FAT then you should be ok.

Does the drive show in disk utility on the MAC?

I'm pretty sure it doesn't show up on the Mac but he said it makes all the right noises when plugged in and starts up which leads me to think it's lost it's partition and probably recovering. I'll get it off him see if my SW picks it up

Check disk utility and see if it shows up there.. if it does then select the mount option.

You also could, if it shows up select the first aid option to see if it fixes any errors..

Ok thanks, I'm getting it off him at the weekend, I'll give it a go
