Free bus plan to get fans to big Ibrox party
FREE shuttle buses from Glasgow city centre could be laid on for fans heading to the Uefa Cup Final beam-back party at Ibrox.

Council chiefs are working on plans to help up to 50,000 fans attend Wednesday's live screening of the showdown with Zenit St Petersburg.

The Evening Times can reveal the match will not be screened in George Square after earlier plans to create a city-centre fanzone were scrapped.

Further talks are due to take place over the next 48 hours to plan a possible victory parade route through the city.

A spokeswoman for Glasgow City Council said: "We've been working very closely with Rangers on the plans for the final.

"We've jointly decided that Ibrox should be the focus of celebrations.

"We therefore shall not have an event in George Square."

MANCHESTER will lay out the welcome mat for Rangers fans in style.

Despite initial apprehension from the authorities they have confirmed they are now confident they can cope with the Glasgow invasion.

Special fan zones' - serving food and drink - will be set up for the near 100,000 fans expected to descend in the city for the Uefa cup final.

Only 13,000 Rangers supporters have tickets for the for the showpiece match at the City of Manchester stadium next week - but tens of thousands more are set to come to Manchester to soak up the atmosphere.

It is estimated the number of coaches already booked to travel down from Glasgow would stretch 13 miles if laid bumper-to-bumper.

Council chiefs and police say they are well prepared and have already earmarked Albert Square and Piccadilly Gardens for fan zones.

There will also be live entertainment and Castlefield will host a series of three-a-side football tournaments for young people from across the city.

The Uefa Cup Final - which will see Rangers take on Zenit St Petersburg, of Russia - is expected to be worth £5million to Manchester.

Police predicted a peaceful event and called on pubs, bars and other businesses to open as normal.

Pat Karney, the council's city centre spokesman, said: "It's going to be a fantastic busy day and we are making plans so that everyone can enjoy themselves.

"There will be dedicated zones for the supporters. Fans will be ambassadors for their clubs and their cities, so our message to them is: please don't let down your home city.

"Manchester is excellent at hosting major events and - just like the Commonwealth Games and major political conferences - we want people to welcome our visitors and enjoy the busy atmosphere."

Chief Superintendent Gerry Donnellan, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "We're delighted the city is hosting this final. Everyone is looking forward to hosting both sets of fans."
