quick android question?

If i root the handset does this allow me the ability to install apps that i download from the web rather than marketplace? or do i need to flash a custom rom to do that?
 
ehm i am pretty sure theres an option for putting non marketplace apps on, in the apps section

rooting is mainly so you can flash a custom rom
 
no mate that can be done without any tinkering and downloading astro file browser from marketplace. Drag and drop app into phone then navigate and open with astro. easy peasy
 
cheers man and this allows me to download pikey versions of the apps and install for free?
 
Rooting allows you to run unsigned apps.Rooting exploits the android kernel which allows root access but it does not install firmware.

So basicaly future updates will remove the root just like the jailbreak on the iphone.

so there isnt really a need to root? i only ask as the sanfrisco i done the other rooting was easy but it messed up when i flashed it so waiting on replacement coming from orange
 
ahhh see i rooted a while back to take the nexus one off vodafone and move to the rom which gets the updated faster mind you all i done to flash was root and then accessed the file from there

i would only root if you planned to flash but make sure its a solid rom
 
geez never had as many helpful replies within a minute of posting lol once i get the replacement phone ill be sure to check with you boys

Last question its an orange phone but im unlocking to t-mobile can i still access the andriod market place using the orange software on phone i.e is andriod a generic app store type thing or will it direct me to an orange specific download?

root if you want to overclock or underclock and run more advanced apps that want control of the kernal like the phone number fakers and such

I saw them on hot uk deals and was tempted myself.

I have got the lg optimus gt540 and for £100 is amazing how much they crammed into it. If im honest i reckon android is far superior to apples os.

yeah well it was hotukdeals i spotted it bought for the mrs as i fancied a wee play with an android she was fed up of the vivaz from what i have seen very impressive... from what i have read certianly a better OS however the screen is also at least on par with apple but the apple feels nicer :)
