ps3 firmware

is there anyway to tell which firmware is on the ps3 with out opening the box
as finaly convinced the mrs to get me one for bday from catalouge but can only send it back if it aint been opened

and only want one for the hack i dont even play games anymore i have a jtagged 512mb jasper 360 sat in cupboard dont even use just like to have a play around with things

I don't think you can as they don't print the firmware anywhere on the packaging.

It seems that if you buy one from somewhere that may have stock lying around in a warehouse you have a good chance that it will be pre-3.42, my m8 got one from The Hut for £229 for the 120gb version and it came with v2.72 firmware, but his sone got one from Argos and it came with v3.42, I have also heard other peeps say that they have had v3.42 on their new PS3's.

Just treated myself to a 320gb ps3 out of tesco at silverburn.
I was happy to get it home and it had firmware 3.40 on it
