PS3 as a DVD player

Hello. I read somewhere that the PS3 will not upscale ordinary DVDs to 720/1080 for best viewing on an HD ready telly. Does anyone know if this is the case? If so, can anyone tell me what the DVD playback is like using the PS3 and an HD telly (I have an LCD and would connect via HDMI).

I'd be gutted to have to buy both a PS3 and an upscaling DVD player. Thanks,

i believe this was a problem when the PS3 launched in America but was sorted with one of the very first firmware downloads. Should not be a problem when released here.

yeah i've heard it's all sorted now and will upscale any DVD to 1080p.

found some info on the subject where all formats are compaired and it makes pretty good reading. As you can't really notice much different from DVD to blue ray according to this guy.
